NHL DFS Analysis and Picks for 12/27/22
The roster freeze is in the final stages before ending tonight at midnight and we are all starting to grab our bearings coming off another round of holiday food, beverages and craziness – my prayers go out to those affected and or being affected by the winter weather –. Tonight we will be back with a large slate now that Christmas Break has ended. There will be no teams playing on a back-to-back. The currently live top-3 highest implied team totals are: Carolina with 4.2, Boston 3.8 and Vancouver with 3.6 goals. I will do my best in guiding you through this twelve-game slate on DraftKings and FanDuel starting at 7:00 p.m. EST.

NHL DFS Goalies
Jake Oettinger- DK $8.1K || FD $7.4K
Opponent - Nashville Predators
There are a few worthwhile choices on the slate at goalie tonight, however, we have found ourselves looking at Oettinger. The Dallas netminder has faltered as of late, however, so has the rest of the team. Nevertheless, he has still won 3 of his last 5 appearances. The Predators own the worst efficient offense on the slate and are the third-worst team in Goals For Per 60 – 2.04 –. Oettinger may have the safest floor on the slate tonight providing very little stress en route to a win.
Others To Consider (Cash/GPP): Kochetkov (DK $8.5K || FD $8.5K), Jarry (DK $8K || FD $7.6K)
Centers
Sebastian Aho-DK $6.6K || FD $8.1K
Opponent - Chicago Blackhawks
Carolina Hurricanes fans can finally take a sigh of relief. Aho Oh Aho is finally back in the lineup and it looks like Rod Brind’Amour is happy enough with the top line featuring Svechnikov-Statsny-Necas, so Aho will find himself anchoring the second line with familiar faces, Teravainen and Jarvis. Aside from his teammates, Chicago is still in the bottom third of the league in virtually every stat that matters and Aho should not have a problem maintaining value tonight.
John Tavares- DK $6.8K || FD $8.4K
Opponent - St Louis Blues
Tavares has surprisingly taken a dip in point production lately, despite averaging 3 shots a game over his last five matches. In that timeframe, he has 1 goal, 2 assists and 18 shots. It is only a matter of time until the puck finds the net again and the Blues are the perfect team to let that happen. They sit in the bottom ten of the league in Shots Against Per 60 – 31.42 –, Scoring Chances Against Per 60 – 31.74 – and Goals Against Per 60 – 2.76 –. To emphasize the opportunity Tavares has, the second line of the Blues is their worst defensive line on the roster with a 12.35 Relative Fenwick Against Per 60.
Others To Consider (CASH/GPP): Malkin (DK $6.5K || FD $7.7K), Novak (DK $4.1K || FD $3.8K)
NHL DFS Wings
Teuvo Teravainen- DK $3.7K || FD $5.2K
Opponent - Chicago Blackhawks
There are zero reasons why someone should not be playing Teravainen tonight. In his 10 games since returning from injury, he has 2 goals, 3 assists and 23 shots while playing with Kotkaniemi who provides very little in terms of success or consistency. However, Teravainen is getting a massive teammate quality boost with Sebastian Aho returning to the lineup to anchor the second line. Teravainen should instantly see an increase in production in both peripherals and also points. Aforementioned, Chicago is still poor in the majority of concerning stats and it provides Teravainen the perfect chance to have a ceiling game tonight.
Phi Kessel- DK $3.1K || FD $4.4K
Opponent - Los Angeles Kings
In what is our ‘risky’ play of the night, Kessel looks to be playing yet another game in an elevated role on the second line. With teammate Jonathan Marchessault out day-to-day with an injury, Kessel has taken over his responsibilities, as well as manning a spot on the top power-play unit. For the salary he is at, in what will be a heavily contested matchup, Kessel only needs to take a few shots to maintain value and anything after that comes as an added bonus.
Others To Consider (CASH/GPP): Rantanen (DK $8K || FD $10.2K), Marner (DK $6.9K || FD $8.5K)
Defense
Erik Gustafsson- DK $4K || FD $4.7K
Opponent - New York Rangers
It is hard to gauge exactly who will be taking over for John Carlson while he recovers from being hit by a puck, but based on the lineup before the injury, Gustafsson was seeing top-pairing minutes and top power-play minutes with Carlson. The current lineup and the past lineup when Carlson was out, leads one to assume that Gustafsson will take over the bulk of the duties as he did the last time Carlson was out. In Gustafsson’s last five games, he has 4 goals, 3 assists, 17 shots and 6 blocked shots. This would be an incredible big-time value play that has the potential to hit yet another ceiling game in a rivalry matchup with the New York Rangers.
Mark Giordano- DK $4.2K || FD $4.9K
Opponent - St Louis Blues
We are all in for a big-time treat with Mark Giordano now getting top-pairing minutes for the Maple Leafs. Hopefully, soon enough he will also get a chance on the top power-play with Rasmus Sandin out, but for now, we will make do with what we get. For those that do not know Giordano and his play style, he once captained the Calgary Flames and he was a heavy presence in the game with his consistent and successful two-way play. If we are able to get even a glimpse of his former self, Giordano will easily surpass his current salary. Over his last five games, he has 3 assists, 4 shots and 6 blocked shots. The peripherals are not there right now, but they will come with the increase in ice time, opportunities and teammate skill.
Others To Consider (CASH/GPP): Letang (DK $5.3K || FD $5.8K), Benning (DK $3.3K || FD $4.2K)
