Three-Man Weave: Fantasy Basketball's Shooters

In This Article hide

Like salt to a chef, the three-ball and basketball are linked. As the NBA changes, so does fantasy basketball.

Basketball's love affair with analytics and three-point shot has dramatically changed the way the game is played. It has also changed the way we view fantasy basketball's shooters. As the long distance shooting grows so does the influx of players who can produce value in that category. The way to create an edge is to find those who can not only shoot for volume from beyond the arc, but also shoot a great percentage at every spot on the floor.

There's a advanced statistical category for this.

True shooting percentage calculates one's efficiency by taking into account three-point, two-point and free-throw shooting. These three players rank in the top-20 in true shooting percentage while near the league-leaders in threes per game.

While there can only be one Shooter,

These are The Shooters.

The Shooters

Stephen Curry

What else can be said about the greatest shooter to every play in the NBA.

He can create space and shoot off the dribble.

He can mess up dribbling and still make you look silly.

He can make everyone on your team look silly.

Just don't leave him open.

What Steph Curry is doing is unprecedented. He leads the NBA in true shooting percentage at .673 while shooting 4.5 threes per game. Curry averages almost 50 percent from the floor, 41 percent from three and over 91 percent from the line. Only nine players have ever entered the 50-40-90 club. Curry would be only the second player to do it more than once. As noted above, if it seems like every time he's open, his shot is going in, it is because over 80 percent of the time, it is.

Insane.

Kevin Durant

Durant, AKA, the Slim Repear, AKA, Durantula AKA, KD, AKA...

Maybe Kevin will be suffice.

Much like Curry, what Durant brings is a one-of-a-kind skillset. A 7-footer should not be able to do this.

Sorry. Wrong footage.

Durant is already a member of the 50-40-90 club and is flirting with renewing his membership this season. He is shooting 51 percent from the floor, 42 percent from three and 89 percent from the charity stripe. His .639 true shooting percentage is seventh in the league.

It's well known that Durant and Curry are two of the best shooters in the league. They have won three of the last four MVPs. They terrorized the entire NBA last year as teammates. Yet what they are doing this year--two teammates in the 50-40-90 club--would be historic.

Joe Ingles

While this may be the reaction by many seeing Ingles on a list with both Durant and Curry, the Aussie's game is nothing to laugh about.

Ingles is producing six-round value. He is averaging 10.6 points, 4.1 assists, 4.1 rebounds, 1.1 steals, 2.5 threes while shooting 47 percent from the floor, 45 percent from three and 81 percent from the line. Not bad for a guy who the Clippers cut the day before the season was set to start while his wife was on a plane from Australia to celebrate.

Ingles ranks ninth in true shooting percentage at .633.

Only six of the true shooting percentage's top 20 plays on the perimeter. While the NBA continues to value the three point ball more, finding a perimeter player who can drain threes but still not affect his overall shooting percentage is a rare feat.

It's what The Shooters do.
