ANALYSIS: St. Louis Cardinals second base/shortstop prospect Thomas Saggese has been showing elite power potential this season at Triple-A and is quickly approaching his major league debut.
Through 33 games this season with Triple-A Memphis, the 22-year-old has a .248/.336/.416 line with five long balls, four stolen bases, and 18 RBI.
Saggese spent all of last season at Double-A and tallied 25 long balls with an impressive .318/.385/.551 line. He then got a small taste of Triple-A in the final 13 games of the campaign and hit only one home run in that span.
The former fifth-round selection has clearly settled in at Triple-A and is beginning to flash the upside power he showed all last season.

Currently, the Cardinals have given primary second-base duties to Nolan Gorman. He has struggled with a .187/.281/.358 but it would be hard to see the Cardinals simply have him ride pine and give the role to Saggese.
Also, Saggese has started many games at shortstop this season, but the Cardinals currently have young 22-year-old Masyn Winn holding those duties in the major leagues, and he has held his own with a solid .275/.336/.358 line.
Instead, Saggese’s best route to a promotion could be as a designated hitter. Matt Carpenter has started at designated hitter this past weekend after returning from an oblique injury but is 38-year-old and nearing the end of his career. If Saggese continues to show his upside power at Triple-A, he could easily become the primary option at DH in St. Louis.
He is worth stashing in deeper mixed formats for now. When he is promoted he is worth considering in shallow leagues.
