On Saturday morning, the NASCAR Cup Series held the qualifying session for this weekend's GEICO 500 at Talladega Superspeedway. This qualifying session consisted of two rounds.
This weekend's qualifying session was a little different than what we're used to. Drivers were not split into their normal groups, but instead all of them made one qualifying lap in round one and then the ten fastest drivers advanced to round two, where they made another qualifying lap to determine starting positions first through 10th.
The ten fastest drivers in the first round were: Michael McDowell, Kyle Busch, Todd Gilliland, Austin Cindric, Joey Logano, Martin Truex, Jr., Austin Dillon, Christopher Bell, Chris Buescher, and Chase Elliott. It is worth noting that NASCAR found unapproved adjustments on Kyle Larson's No. 5 Chevrolet before his qualifying lap and he was not able to participate in qualifying.
