Steven Adams is worth considering as a fantasy basketball waiver wire pickup heading into Week 5 of the 2022-23 NBA season.
BALLER MOVE: Add in 12+ Team Leagues
ROSTERED IN: 48% of leagues
ANALYSIS: There are 14 pure centers (only C-eligible) currently rostered in more leagues than Steven Adams is. Some of those players: Mitchell Robinson, Alperen Sengun, and Jufuf Nurkic just to name a few. Adams, though, has produced fantasy points at a top-20 pace among those labeled mainly a "C" in fantasy leagues while still clearly undervalued by many (if not most) GMs.
Adams is starting games for the Grizzlies on a daily basis and that won't change ROS. The eventual comeback of Jaren Jackson Jr. will definitely eat a bit from his numbers, mostly on the boards, but that's all there'll be to it and we're probably more than two months away from watching JJJ appear in a game.
Starting with the negatives, you can forget about Adams helping you on the floor-stretching front. He can shoot a three to save his life and won't any time soon. That's it, that's all of the negatives right there. On the positive side you're getting a perennial starter playing 27 MPG and getting a low-but-efficient 13% usage rate these days.
Adams is averaging only 6+ PPG (sucks) but on the other hand, he's pulling down 11.5 RPG to go with 2+ APG, 1+ BPG, and nearly one steal per game too. Only 11 other true-C are blocking more shots, and just two (Evan Mobley and Nicolas Claxton) are doing it reaching Adams' 0.8 SPG.
The scoring is putrid but Adams can help you with a phenomenal combination of RPG+APG+BPG nearly unparalleled in the NBA.
