ANALYSIS: As much as I have fiercely supported Spencer Turnbull all season, the caveat had always been that his first few games were against very poor hitting teams, and that we needed to see what he could do against good hitters.
He had a start two weeks ago against Boston that was solid, with five shutout innings but only two strikeouts and four walks. He took an even bigger step forward last week, tossing six innings against the Phillies and only giving up one run on three hits and two walks, while striking out five.
That means that through six starts, Turnbull boasts a 2-2 record, 2.53 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, and a 22.6% strikeout rate. At this point, he needs to be rostered everywhere. There's still some concern about the walk totals (9.5%) and his FIP (3.69) and SIERA (4.37) don't support his low ERA. Still, Turnbull has yet to give up more than three earned runs all year, one of less than 10 starters who can say that through six starts this season.
Turnbull has the Royals next, and he should be started in every fantasy format. And he should be held through that start until the other shoe drops - if it ever does.
