BALLER MOVE: Add in 12+ Team Leagues
OWNED IN: 5% of Yahoo! leagues
ANALYSIS: I wrote last week that Turnbull's performance against the Red Sox was going to go a long way in determining if he is actually worth a longer look in deeper leagues, or if he only a streamer when facing poor offenses.
Turnbull showed up against Boston, throwing five shutout innings which now gives him a 2.77 ERA and a 23.2% strikeout rate through five starts. Turnbull has not given up more than three earned runs this entire season, and has emerged as one of Detroit's best arms.
However, this performance didn't actually give me a ton more confidence in the young right-hander. He walked four and only struck out two, while giving up six hits. It was fairly uninspiring, and points to some underlying concerns going forward. For starters, his 3.73 FIP and 4.42 SIERA are certainly paining a different picture of his productivity this year, as is his 1.31 WHIP and 9.8% walk rate.
Plus, while Boston should be a better hitting team than the Royals, Blue Jays, Pirates and Indians that Turnbull faced previously, thus far they really haven't been.
I still like Turnbull, and think he's undervalued in most formats. I'm not rushing out to grab him in 12-teamers, but I'd want to own him anywhere deeper than that, and think he's a valuable streamer with heavy potential for more.
