With the Chicago Cubs going through a bit of an offensive drought in June, many fans and fantasy baseball players have to be wondering if minor leaguer Owen Caissie could be the next hitting prospect called up to Chicago.
Mike Tauchman is hurt, and Pete Crow-Armstrong is hitting just .192 this season while attempting to fill in. Pete can steal bases, but he's struggling to get on base at the big-league level.
With Caissie having a solid year at Triple-A, could the Cubs be calling his number soon? And if so, is he going to be worth a spot on fantasy rosters?
How High Is Owen Caissie's Fantasy Potential?
Caissie is a former second-round pick of the San Diego Padres who came over to Chicago in the Yu Darvish trade. It's been a steady climb through the minor league ranks for Caissie, and he had his best season statistically last year in Double-A when he hit 22 home runs, drove in 84 runs, and stole seven bases.
This year he has spent entirely at Triple-A Iowa where he's slashing .283/.392/.450 with eight home runs and 45 RBI. His power numbers are down a little, but his walk rate has improved and he's also improved his stolen base conversion percentage as he's swiped five bags in seven attempts.

Caissie will appear in the MLB futures game over the All-Star break, where he will have a chance to make an impression on the Cubs and the rest of the league with a solid performance.
When Might Owen Caissie Get A Major-League Opportunity?
There's no telling what the Cubs might choose to do at the deadline in terms of being buyers, sellers, or just standing pat. This year's team seems to be stuck in neutral right now and can't seem to get over the hump. If the Cubs are going to keep trying to contend this Summer, then Caissie could easily finish out the rest of the season at Triple-A.

However, if trades are made or the Cubs fall further behind in the standings, they could choose to bring Caissie up in August or September and give him an early audition for next season.
Caissie is just 1% rostered in Yahoo! leagues, so managers in all but the deepest of leagues can leave him on the wire until we get a more concrete update on when he might get his crack at a spot on the big league roster.
