Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Dominic Canzone is one of this season's biggest prospect risers. He came into the 2023 season as a relative unknown, ranking lower in Arizona's prospect hierarchy. But he has blossomed into one of the best hitters in the minors, slashing .339/.420/.625 with 16 home runs, 59 runs, 68 RBI, and two stolen bases for Triple-A Reno.
But there are still weaknesses in a player who has seemed almost invincible at the plate this season. While he's racked up double-digit steals in his past two years, he isn't particularly light-footed, limiting him to a corner spot or a DH role. And while it's tough to call a .775 OPS against lefties troubling, it pales in comparison to his 1.148 OPS against right-handed pitchers.
Despite his weaknesses, the 25-year-old Canzone is one of the prime stashes in fantasy leagues. His huge power and all-around offensive skill are traits that fantasy players are always desperate for, but will all of it come together at the major-league level? Is Dominic Canzone worth stashing in redraft leagues? We'll take a look into it.
Can Dominic Canzone Get The Call To The Bigs?
Canzone has performed well enough to warrant a call-up to any major-league team, but the Diamondbacks have little space to spare in their top-five scoring lineup.
22-year-old phenom Corbin Carroll is firmly planted in one outfield spot. Jake McCarthy's elite speed, defense, and hitting success since his recall in late May fill another space in the outfield. And while Alek Thomas has struggled this season, he's far more playable defensively and has held his own on offense since his recall in June.
The recalls of Dominic Fletcher and Kyle Lewis this past week should be somewhat worrying, but there is little chance that both can parlay their call-ups into full-time stays.
Kyle Lewis should be watched closely, as his performance will determine if/when Canzone gets a call-up. A former top prospect, Lewis' career has been derailed by injury, with a sub-.240 wOBA in his last two seasons. He received a call-up a few days ago to replace Pavin Smith as the fourth outfielder and occasional designated hitter. If Canzone is called up, it'll be to replace Lewis in that role.
Whether it be in a few weeks, in September, or even from another team, Dominic Canzone is likely to get a call-up this season. Still, poor success against left-handed pitchers and the difficult path ahead to regular playing time make him more of a focus for fantasy players in deeper redraft leagues.
