Trey McBride Fantasy Football Outlook
With Zach Ertz on IR, second-year tight end Trey McBride had a huge performance against the Ravens last week. He was targeted 14 times, hauling in 10 passes for 95 yards and a touchdown.
It was a performance that made a lot of sense. When Ertz was on the field, quarterback Joshua Dobbs targeted him often. With McBride sliding into that role, things didn't change.
There's one problem heading into Week 9, though. Dobbs is gone. The Cardinals traded him and this week will start rookie Clayton Tune at the position. Tune has thrown just one pass in the NFL.
Should I Start Trey McBride in Week 9?
The introduction of Tune makes the equation more difficult, but it's hard to imagine that McBride won't play a key role this week considering he saw 14 targets last week. The playcalling should remain fairly similar. In fact, there's an argument to be made that safe throws to the tight end can help acclimate Tune to the NFL game.
While Tune didn't target tight ends a ton in college, that's really more just the nature of the Cougars offense, which spreads the ball out. The Cardinals are much more reliant on the tight end position, so expect to see that trend continue.
McBride is a low-end TE1 play this week due to the fact that we're really only working off a one-game sample with him as the starter. Still, he has immense upside if the Tune targets him as much as Dobbs did back in Week 8.
