Minnesota Vikings running back Alexander Mattison came into the 2023 NFL season with an enhanced role after the organization released Dalvin Cook this offseason. The 25-year-old flashed in a few starts over the last few years but had never seen more than 166 touches in a season.
He has delivered mixed results so far this year as the full-time starter and after the team traded for Cam Akers, fantasy managers are surely worried about his workload taking a hit.
Should you start Mattison in Week 4? Where does he rank among running backs? Let's dive in.

Alexander Mattison Fantasy Football Outlook
In Week 4, Mattison squares off with the winless Carolina Panthers, who have allowed the third-most fantasy points to running backs through three weeks. The Panthers allowed Tyler Allgeier, Tony Jones Jr., and Kenneth Walker to each find the end zone twice.
Although touchdowns aren't a sticky stat game-to-game, Mattison should have goal line opportunities in this NFC contest.
Minnesota felt the need to bring in another running back, but it gave up a mere 2026 sixth-round pick to acquire Akers. Akers was once a promising young prospect, but he has averaged just 3.9 yards per carry over the last two seasons. He hasn't been the same since his Achilles tear in 2021.
Especially early on, he shouldn't be a threat to overtake Mattison as the primary back.
Alexander Mattison Running Back Rankings Analysis
Our consensus staff rankings have Mattison at the RB14 spot in half-PPR formats this week. He saw 25 total touches last week and should see at least close to that number in Week 4 in a favorable matchup.
He is ranked just behind Derrick Henry and just ahead of Miles Sanders in our Week 4 pecking order.
Should I Start Alexander Mattison In Week 4 Fantasy Football?
Relying on the "Who Should I Start" tool to compare a few similar players, Mattison is a clear Week 4 starter unless you're playing in a very shallow league.
He's a fringe RB1 play this week and should maintain the bell cow role for at least another game or two. Carolina's defense is far worse than expected thus far, so Minnesota's skill players are in good shape in this spot.
