Should I Pick Up Taysom Hill After His Week 5 Performance? Waiver Wire Outlook

If Buffalo’s Josh Allen was not the most valuable player in fantasy football during Week 5 of the NFL season, then the distinction should go to New Orleans do-it-all wunderkind Taysom Hill.

All Hill did was rush for 112 yards and a trio of touchdowns while adding a 22-yard touchdown toss against the defensively-challenged Seattle Seahawks. He touched the ball 10 times and turned four of the plays into touchdowns. Hill can run, throw, catch, and is a gamebreaker every time the ball is in his hands. And when he has plays specifically designed for his skill set, what he can do on a football field is unimaginable.

Hill is listed as a tight end on the Saints roster, but he has been doing 99 percent of his fantasy damage when he is called to quarterback the offense in certain situations as part of special offensive packages. Fantasy footballers have known about Hill’s exploits for a couple years now, but this is the first season he has been eligible as a tight end in fantasy formats. That changes everything. Here is my take on whether you should pick up Hill in your fantasy league:

Should I Add Taysom Hill In Fantasy Football?

Yes, but only if you need a tight end and he qualifies as one in your league. Hill is the top tight end available on fantasy free agent lists right now because he gets five-to-10 touches per game, which is more than any other tight end on a waiver wire is getting these days. The extra-added bonus is that Hill gets many of his touches inside the red zone, increasing his fantasy value. Another extra-added bonus is he gets the bulk of his touches as a QB and not as a TE.

Now if you are looking for a quarterback for your fantasy squad, taking a flier on Hill is like taking a flier on a Powerball ticket. There is a one-in-a-million chance you will hit the fantasy jackpot and Hill becomes the Saints starting signal caller and plays like Lamar Jackson, but more than likely he will give you 25-75 rushing yards and a touchdown every week and not much else.

Hill has only thrown one pass in a month-plus. His results as a quarterback have been uneven as he has a nine-to-eight touchdown-to-interception ratio for his career. New Orleans would rather have Jameis Winston or Andy Dalton run the offense full-time than have Hill as the starter again, or so it seems. That stunts his fantasy worth if you want to use him as a QB. There are games where Hill gets only a handful of carries and finishes with 25 yards and no scores. That would ruin your chances of winning if you used him as your quarterback the week he has one of those games.

Pick Hill up if you can use him as a tight end. The guy is a top-10 fantasy TE and should be throughout the season. Do not pick him up if you have an alternate plan like making him your QB. It is as simple as that.
