Scott Fish Bowl 14 Draft Strategy Guide

As the countdown to Scott Fish Bowl 14 rolls on, the fantasy football universe is buzzing -- from celebs to hard-core enthusiasts -- everyone's fine-tuning their draft strategies. But amid all the mock drafts and sleeper picks, let's not lose sight of what truly powers this event: the opportunity to support charities and strengthen our incredible fantasy football community. It's all about giving back, folks.

Pumped and ready to dive into the fray, I’m set to make a splash in the SFB14 with a live draft in Cleveland, Ohio, from the Vontae Mack Division, picking from the 1.01! Josh Allen, anyone? If you’ve missed the boat on entering, you can still catch the draft action and even join a Scott Fish Bowl mirror league to draft alongside the real deal with the same setup. For the scoop on this, hit up Scott Fish on X.

With the SFB usually kicking off draft season earlier than most, it’s our unofficial cue that the fantasy football season is almost upon us. Sure, we're all trying to soak up the summer sun, but let’s be honest, the thrill of NFL training-camp season is just around the corner. But who’s counting down the days to football season? Definitely not us fantasy diehards, right?

Be sure to check all of our fantasy football rankings for 2025:

The Pure Randomness of Superflex Drafts

The Superflex format is where a fantasy football draft truly gets its flavor with an unpredictable, dynamic, and complete shake-up from the snoozefest of predictable RB runs in standard 1QB leagues. It's like someone hit the chaos button, especially with that third-round reversal twist in the Scott Fish Bowl, turning each draft into a high-stakes, strategic battleground! More on that later.

Having a game plan is key, but in Superflex, where quarterbacks are worth their weight in gold, you’ve gotta be nimble with your strategy. The QBs can get snapped up fast, and if you’re caught snoozing at the end of a run, you might spend the whole draft playing a frustrating game of catch-up.

Then throw in the third-round reversal -- talk about a game-changer! If you're kicking things off at the 1.01 and not picking again until 2.12 and 3.12, the long wait can feel like a marathon. Skip a quarterback in the first round, and by the time it swings back to you, the pickings could be slim, leaving you to trudge through the mud with fewer stellar QB choices. Every pick is crucial, and every decision is magnified. Welcome to the wild ride of Superflex drafts!

Third-Round Reversal

Here’s a cool twist that might even throw the veteran draft sharks for a loop. As someone who's navigated the choppy seas of Superflex leagues quite a bit, the third-round reversal (3RR) is becoming more of the norm. Here’s the deal with 3RR: once you hit the third round, the drafting order flips upside down. So, the dude chilling at 1.12 and scooping up 2.01 also grabs the 3.01. Sounds like a party trick, right? Well, this little flip brings a dose of fairness to the draft table, making sure those stacked with top-tier QBs like Josh Allen or Patrick Mahomes have to wait just a bit longer for their next pick.

Scott Fish shook things up by mixing this 3RR into the scoring setup, leveling the playing field so that the fantasy boss at 1.12 gets to walk away with three of the top-25 picks. Whether that's a blessing or a bummer depends on your draft strategy and how you rate the players. To not just survive but thrive with this setup, hit up a bunch of mock drafts to get the hang of this 3RR dance. You can catch some ADP action from mock drafts and find plenty of mock drafting sessions on platforms like Fantasy Mocks or over on Sleeper. Gear up and get drafting -- it’s going to be a wild ride!

Understanding SFB14 Rules and Settings

The rosters and lineups are going to be deeper for the Scott Fish Bowl compared to your typical redraft leagues. This year, there are a lot more flexes, and right now, your starting lineup will be the following:

  • 1 QB
  • 1 RB
  • 1 WR
  • 1 TE
  • 5 Flex
  • 1 Superflex
  • 1 Kicker
  • 11 Bench Spots
  • No IR Slots

Here’s the deal with your fantasy football flex strategy: You’re the master of your domain, whether that’s stacking your lineup with RBs, WRs, or TEs.

For those drafting on Sleeper, you're locked into having a kicker in the mix. MFL players, on the other hand, you’ve got a bit more wiggle room -- you can choose to turbocharge your team with additional kickers flexing in your lineup for added floor.

Now, let's dig into the meaty part -- the SFB14 rulebook, which you can peep here. But let me break down a couple of juicy bits for you:

  1. Tight End Premium Scoring: Every catch by your TE nets an extra half point, and if they hustle enough to snag a first down, that’s another full bonus point. This makes TEs gold dust in this league -- think of Travis Kelce or Sam LaPorta as being not just a TE but potentially the first WR off your draft board!
  2. Running Back Bonus: Every time your RB barrels through for a first down, that’s an additional half point in your pocket.
  3. Kicker's Delight with Decimal Scoring: Say goodbye to the flat three-point field goals. A 42-yarder? That’s 4.2 points. A 59-yard monster? That’s a sweet 5.9 points. Made extra points are also worth 3.3 points.
  4. Kickoff and Punt Return Scoring: Since the NFL is bringing back the kickoff, this could impact fantasy football leagues everywhere in 2024 depending on their scoring settings. In the SFB14, a player will receive 10 fantasy points for returning a kickoff or a punt return for a touchdown. They will also receive one point for every five return yards, whether on a kickoff or a punt return. What does this mean? Very long touchdown returns are going to be worth a massive amount of points. The only thing we don't have a ton of clarity on this early in the offseason is just how each of the 32 depth charts will look on special teams come September.

The Optimal Roster Build

The SFB14 scoring system is a game-changer, leveling the playing field so that QBs and TEs can throw their weight around just as much as RBs and WRs do. It's a setup where every position has a shot to be a game-winner, seriously shaking up traditional fantasy strategies.

Take the "Bully TE" strategy that's catching on -- it's all about snagging a powerhouse tight end (or two) right out of the gate. We're talking big league players like Travis Kelce, Sam LaPorta, Mark Andrews, Trey McBride, Dalton Kincaid, Kyle Pitts, George Kittle, and Evan Engram. Once you're past these giants, the TE talent pool tends to dive, at least that's what last season's scores tell us.

The Scott Fish Bowl isn't just any fantasy league; it's a high-stakes, all-out brawl that demands excellence from every slot on your roster. To stand a chance at clinching that trophy and earning some serious fantasy football clout, you're going to need peak performances across the board. And let’s be real, unless a dark-horse TE emerges this season, having a top-tier TE could be your golden ticket to high scores come playoff time.

So, strap in and draft smart -- securing an elite QB or TE isn't just a good move, it's a potential game-winner given the unique scoring mechanics of this league. Draft not just for position, but for potential -- because players like Jalen Hurts, Mark Andrews, or Travis Kelce don't just play; they dominate.

Conclusion

Want a sneak peek at how I did in last year's showdown? Check it out below. We ended up making it to the semifinals after a mostly healthy season and a solid draft. Once TE Trey McBride emerged in Arizona, he was starting at flex every week and scoring a ton of fantasy points. RB Tony Pollard was mostly a fantasy bust for where he was drafted, but getting WR DJ Moore and QB Brock Purdy in the seventh and eighth rounds, respectively, worked out quite handsomely.

Remember, in a tournament setting like this, it’s all about swinging for the fences. You're playing the long game across a vast field, not just scrapping against 11 others, so the strategy? Draft with an eye for sky-high potential and prioritize your tiers.

Don't forget what's at the core of the Scott Fish Bowl -- it's all for a stellar cause, and it's a golden ticket to mingle with some top-notch folks from every slice of the fantasy football world. Yes, we're all here tweaking our rosters, sweating the picks, and hoping to carve our names into the SFB Hall of Fame. But hey, the real trophy? It's the experience, the camaraderie, and the sheer joy of the game. If you've managed to snag a spot in #SFB14, soak it all in, enjoy the ride, and make the most of every draft pick and FAAB pickup.
