New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley has been vocal all offseason about wanting a long-term contract. After rushing for a career-high 1,312 rush yards last season, Barkley wanted to be paid among the best running backs in the league.
However, the Giants and Barkley couldn't come to terms on a new deal by Monday's 4 PM ET deadline. So, the Pro Bowl running back will play under the franchise tag for $10.09 million this season if he chooses to suit up for the Giants.
Will Barkley report to training camp? What is his fantasy football outlook? Let's dive in.
Will Saquon Barkley Report To Training Camp?
Barkley seemed extremely frustrated that he didn't receive a new long-term deal with the Giants -- tweeting the words "it is what it is" following Monday's deadline. The superstar back reportedly turned down a $13 million per year deal earlier this offseason with $19.5 million guaranteed.
Of the three running backs to play on the franchise tag this upcoming season (Barkley, Dallas Cowboys running back Tony Pollard, and Las Vegas Raiders running back Josh Jacobs), the Giants running back is the most likely candidate to hold out. Veterans will report to New York's training camp on Tuesday, July 25.
It remains to be seen if Barkley will report to training camp next week. All signs point to the 26-year-old not being present and possibly missing Week 1 against the Dallas Cowboys.
Saquon Barkley Fantasy Football Outlook
If you're drafting this weekend, it's a risk to draft Barkley at his ADP. He's currently going late in the first or early in the second round in fantasy. If he holds out through training camp, he could miss multiple regular-season games as well.
The good news, though, for those drafting in late August is that we should know more about Barkley's holdout situation by then. If the former Penn State star decides to not hold out and attend training camp, he is a fantastic pick at the end of the first round this year.
Barkley finished as the RB5 in PPR formats last year while averaging 17.7 points per contest. He had just three games under 10 PPR points with 10 games over 17 PPR points. He's a big part of New York's offense and should be able to repeat those big fantasy numbers again if he stays healthy in 2023.
