ANALYSIS: Denver Broncos Samaje Perine joined the team this offseason after spending several years with the Cincinnati Bengals. New head coach Sean Payton convinced Perine to join the Broncos after sharing his vision with the veteran about teaming up with Javonte Williams in the backfield. While the former Bengal has played a meaningful role for Denver this season, it hasn’t translated into consistent fantasy production.
Perine is the RB41 for the year, averaging six half-point PPR fantasy points per game. He has had fewer than nine touches in all but two contests this season, resulting in only one rushing touchdown.
Over the past two weeks, the veteran earned 10 touches for 50 offensive yards and 8.5 fantasy points. After starting the year slowly, Williams has become the featured running back in Denver, limiting Perine’s fantasy upside.
Tonight, Perine faces the Detroit Lions in a critical matchup for both team’s playoff chances. The Lions have had an excellent run defense, holding running backs to the sixth-fewest fantasy points per game (15.1). Last week, they surrendered only 64 rushing yards and 9.8 fantasy points to the Chicago Bears backfield, making Perine unstartable in all season-long leagues.
