ANALYSIS: Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta has been a fantasy superstar as a rookie. Historically, tight ends struggle to produce for fantasy players as rookies. LaPorta has broken that trend. He is the TE1 for the year, averaging 11.5 half-point PPR fantasy points per game.
The second-round pick has been part of a home run draft class for general manager Brad Holmes. LaPorta leads the team in receiving touchdowns with nine. The rookie also ranks fourth in the NFL in that category, including first among tight ends. He and Jahmyr Gibbs are the first set of rookie teammates to have nine or more offensive touchdowns in NFL history.
LaPorta has been on fire lately, averaging 14.6 fantasy points per game over the past five weeks, scoring 24.5 or more twice. Two weeks ago, he had three receiving touchdowns and a career-high 26.1 fantasy points in the blowout win over the Denver Broncos.
Tomorrow, LaPorta faces a Dallas Cowboys defense that has held tight ends to 8.3 fantasy points per game, the eighth-fewest in the NFL. While the matchup is less than ideal, the rookie is too talented to bench in season-long leagues.
