One and Done Selections - The U.S. Open
In this feature, our golf staff of Joe Nicely, Spencer Aguiar, Andrew Putters, Josh Bennett, Byron Lindeque and our special guest will provide their weekly golf picks every Wednesday. The purpose of this article is to present you with alternative options to consider and hopefully make your selection a much easier process weekly. With that plan in mind, let's get started!
Joe Nicely - Scottie Scheffler
Alternate - Brooks Koepka
As with seemingly any major championship, there’s about a million and one different angles we could take with this week’s U.S. Open. There are lots of unknowns about the course, as well as how the skill sets of some of the world’s best golfers will fit Los Angeles Country Club.
Perhaps the one constant this season - and last for that matter - has been Scottie Scheffler, a player that last finished worse than 12th-place in an event last October. That staggering feat is made all the more impressive by the fact that the talented Texan has battled an uncooperative putter for the bulk of 2023.
Scheffler's dominance is often boring, as it usually seems like he’s in the midst of a ho-hum round, only to have ended the day at three or four under par and several shots better than most. News flash…boring golf wins U.S. Opens and I look for last year’s Masters champion to add to his major count by simply outclassing the field with his tee-to-green excellence this week and outlasting them with largely mistake-free golf
Yearly Earnings - $3,696,642
Yearly Cuts Made - 20/21
Josh Bennett - Brooks Koepka
Alternate - Max Homa
A simple choice for me, Brooks has continued to prove he is here for the majors and his game is good for major golf. Since finally recovering injury, LIV tour and the majors have been really good for him, so I don’t see any reason why he won’t succeed at a U.S. Open, an event that he’s already won twice. Major Brooks is obviously back, a no brainer to load him up for this event.

Spencer Aguiar - Cameron Smith
Alternate - Brooks Koepka
It has oftentimes been these wide-open venues like St. Andrews or Kapalua where Cameron Smith has presented his best ability to skyrocket himself up the leaderboard. My model graded him second in projected strokes gained total to mimic Los Angeles Country Club, and it goes back to his success at Augusta that when a course gets open, but the need for short-game acumen stays in place, Smith's upside increases further than we would get during an average contest.
The goal was to always use Jon Rahm here, but I think the best chance I have of winning is to go a little off the board with a LIV player and hoping for the best.
Yearly Earnings - $3,972,264
Yearly Cuts Made - 13/21
Byron Lindeque - Collin Morikawa
Well, Sahith Theegala and his driver fell into the chocolate river at Charlie's Chocolate factory, losing -3.5 strokes in the first two rounds last week. Woof. We did not hit that stinger 2 iron off the tee like we hoped. He still made the cut but we are moving on.
The Ketchup Kings (my OAD team name) are in 500th place in a 800 person contest, and true to their name, they have less $ earned since the the start of the 2022/2023 season which began last fall, than they have accrued in this article’s contest, as I forget to submit a pick about once every two months. So, we are in Ketchup mode!
Enter Collin Morikawa. With odds drifting into the the upper 30s on the news of recent back and short game spasms, we are going to take a “long shot” with the California kid, who has won two majors already and tends to gain strokes chipping and putting in majors, for what ever reason. With a short game that can actually help gain strokes in these kinds of events, why not take a shot at one of the best iron players in the world.
Morikawa has the 4th best strokes gained average in majors since 2017 and is hopefully the secret assassin that scores us $3,150,000 in prize money shooting us up a few hundred spots which will still leave us desperately out of contention in my personal OAD. No spasms, spike putting, and splendid approach play will be the 5 Ds needed to succeed in dodgeball at LACC.
Yearly Earnings - $8,585,570
Yearly Cuts Made - 19/21
Andrew Putters - Brooks Koepka
Alternate - Max Homa
This is an easy pick this week for multiple reasons. First, it appears Brooks is all the way back with his 2nd at The Masters and win at the PGA Championship. Second, Brooks does not base his preparation on any type of statistical data like many other players do. No statistical data is available for LACC. Third, Brooks is a “Big Game Hunter” and this place is BIG!! Lastly, a question you should ask yourself…when was the last time Brooks Koepka was healthy and played badly in a Major Championship? Exactly!! Brooks wins another one this week
Yearly Earnings - $6,328,423
Yearly Cuts Made - 15/22
Mia The Model - Mito Pereira
Alternate - Xander Schauffele
Byron T20
TeeOff T20

Aggregated Results
One of the significant differences you will notice is that I attached the aforementioned percent weight to each player when I randomized the list for the week. That means an option like Xander Schauffele got rewarded for being a better option for our models (which we see with his 15% chance) all the way down to the bottom of our board in Patrick Reed and Mito Pereira - two names that received 2.5%
We agreed on randomizing the list five times to settle on the name, and Mia has decided she wants to roll with Mito Pereira this week as the selection and Xander Schauffele as the alternate.
Let us know what you think of her chances this week!
