One and Done Selections - The RBC Heritage
In this feature, our golf staff of Joe Nicely, Spencer Aguiar, Andrew Putters, Josh Bennett, Byron Lindeque and our special guest will provide their weekly golf picks every Wednesday. The purpose of this article is to present you with alternative options to consider and hopefully make your selection a much easier process weekly. With that plan in mind, let's get started!
Joe Nicely - Matt Kuchar
Alternate - Justin Rose
I guess you could argue the virtue of taking a player like Matt Kuchar in a “Designated Event” that has a huge purse like this week’s RBC Heritage. However, I’m content to go with the veteran on a Harbour Town layout that’s historically been a “plodder’s paradise”.
Like the “Dad Golf” greats that came before him such as Furyk, Simpson, Gay, Cink, Love III, and Donald - legendary plodders all - the 44-year-old’s game can best be described as…khaki, which not only makes for a sharp-looking pair of pants at business casual outings, but also, apparently, leads to success on this Pete Dye layout. Kuchar enters this year’s edition on the heels of his best performance in months - a T3 at Valero in which he gained 7.6 strokes with the irons - and with a remarkable made-cut streak of 18 straight at the Heritage.
Guys that are Kuchar’s (and my) age are predictable creatures. We’re gonna order the same thing at the same restaurants, watch old shows and movies instead of new ones, talk about our kids a bit too much, and buy multiple pairs of the same shoes - JUST IN CASE THEY QUIT MAKING THE ONES WE LIKE. (The Kuch I’s are classics, of course, but I prefer the Kuch IV’s due to their versatility, they come in two colors: tan or light tan. Did you guys know that Skechers are coming out with a new, revolutionary shoe that allows you to put them on without even bending over? You just step right in. I'm reluctantly excited.)
One other certainty is that we always feel on top of our games in the middle-age paradise that is Hilton Head, a place where we let can let our (metaphorical) hair down, untuck our shirt, drink a couple of extra beers, turn the 90’s rock up just a little louder, and crank out T3s in the Heritage. Good vibes, man, positively relaxed, boss vibes. Heck…I bet Kuch goes out and plays like he’s 35 this week.

Josh Bennett - Justin Thomas
Alternate - Patrick Cantlay
Mostly going on a gut play here, there are certainly better options to play this week than someone with mostly average course history and seemingly hasn’t made a putt since 2006. However, if we know anything about putting, it can turn around quickly even if for just one weekend, and JT is doing things well enough in the rest of his game to be able to run away with an event if the putter can get going. On a course that forces a lot of layups off the tee and will require precision with irons and around the green play, there are not a lot of other guys in the field I’d trust that can do both as well as JT. A few putts drop and it will be a nice boost to my score in this elevated event.

Spencer Aguiar - Scottie Scheffler
Alternate - Tony Finau
It has been a laughable 2023 for me in OAD contests. You don't have to look any further than the fact that I programmed a model to randomly make picks, and that model is beating me by over seven million dollars. It has been a disaster.
Honestly, routes of winning this contest have become extremely limited with a reduced player pool and no money, but let's go out swinging this week and back Scottie Scheffler at an event that is more lucrative in its purse than the Masters.
Scheffler has been the best tee-to-green player over my two-year running model by 0.32 shots over the second-ranked player in this field (Jon Rahm), and it just comes down to making putts if he wants to find the winner's circle. The small greens should accentuate his ball striking, making him a last-chance desperation play to get back into this contest.

Byron Lindeque - Cameron Young

As we dock into Harbour Town, the SS Rahm got us on the board with a convincing victory over two LIV golfers whose careers appeared DEAD heading into the week. 1-0 for the “good guys” heading into major season as the Ketchup Kings add $3,240,000 to their OAD total for the year.
If you managed to make it this far into the article, surviving Joe Nicely’s dangerously hilarious piece on Matt Kuchar, we are going about as far away from old as our pick could be, in the supremely athletic form of Young, Cameron Young.
Leading the field in proximity from 150-200 this year (46% of approach shots here), Young wields a mid-iron as competently as Kuchar does a hedge trimmer. The 2nd year PGA Tour professional has amassed more world wide top-3s in the last year and a half than Kuchar has khakis (10). One of those top-3s was at Harbour Town last year, and with Webb Simpon’s former caddie now on the bag, at this golf course, with his precise power and peaking putter, Cameron Young is about to drop a victorious anchor on this field sending waves through the golf world as he wins his first of many, many golf tournaments .
Andrew Putters - Pick To Come!

Mia The Model - Tony Finau
Alternate - Patrick Cantlay

Aggregated Results
One of the significant differences you will notice is that I attached the aforementioned percent weight to each player when I randomized the list for the week. That means an option like Tony Finau got rewarded for being a better option for our models (which we see with his 11% chance) all the way down to the bottom of our board in Adam Svensson, Cameron Davis, Adam Hadwin and J.T. Poston – four golfers that received 2.5% of the projected pick equity.
We agreed on randomizing the list five times to settle on the name, and Mia has decided she wants to roll with Tony Finau this week as the selection and Patrick Cantlay as the alternate. (All names used previously were removed).
*** Mia liked Finau so much that she picked him for both. Do with that what you will. I had to run it a third time to get Cantlay.
Let us know what you think of her chances this week!
