One and Done Selections - The Players Championship
In this feature, our golf staff of Joe Nicely, Spencer Aguiar, Andrew Putters, Josh Bennett, Byron Lindeque and our special guest will provide their weekly golf picks every Wednesday. The purpose of this article is to present you with alternative options to consider and hopefully make your selection a much easier process weekly. With that plan in mind, let's get started!
Joe Nicely - Jason Day
Alternate - Viktor Hovland
I’m taking Jason Day. *****MIC DROP*****
Yearly Earnings - $1,656,556
Yearly Cuts Made - 7/8
Josh Bennett - Will Zalatoris
Alternate - Keegan Bradley
When the courses start to get difficult and course management/strategy starts to become increasingly important because these strategies better protect them from disaster (water), there are a few guys I have on a list that I automatically lean towards. At the very top of this list is Will Zalatoris, so that’s who I ride with this week. We know of his elite ball-striking throughout his short career so far, but I really think how he manages courses makes his chance to score well this week much higher than others. I think his last two years here have shown this to be true as well, at a course that has pretty volatile results from most people with history playing it, he has two pretty steady finishes at 26th and 21st. Not only do I think this is a pretty safe pick in terms of just scoring points in a OAD contest, I do think that he has a really good chance to win the whole thing as well.
Yearly Earnings - $2,406,112
Yearly Cuts Made - 5/8

Spencer Aguiar - Patrick Cantlay
Alternate - Jason Day
I have dug myself into a hole that will force my hands more than I would like at this point of the year. If I had more money and found myself near the top, I probably would play Jason Day and bet on the safety inside my model and move to next week, but the PLAYERS is one of the most oversized purses of the year that I would like to swing for the fence on if I can secure the bag.
Cantlay's course history is the only reason he doesn't rank higher on my model, but the weighted statistics for TPC Sawgrass should provide a much better profile than meets the eye when we look into the numbers. The American ranked inside the top five for weighted tee-to-green, proximity within 125 yards, total driving in 2023 and birdie or better/bogey avoidance. The floor is another frustrating miss cut, but it depends on how aggressively you want to play this event.
Yearly Earnings - $746,154
Yearly Cuts Made - 5/8
Byron Lindeque - Max Homa
Keegan Bradley stayed extremely on brand, surging up the leaderboard on Sunday to ultimately finish T10. He is the owner of the Ketchup Krown so far, although 10th place doesn’t really do much considering all 133 of the 790 participants in my OAD had Rory McIlroy (T2). That OAD is just drenched in chalky puke, but what can we do.
This week, we are going to lean on the best iron player in the field, Max Homa. At 20-1, he won’t be THE chalk of the week as 100+ people used him at the Genesis. Max finished 13th here last year and is a remarkably improved golfer over the last year, who is absolutely live to win the PLAYERS!
There is a lot to like about somebody who finished T14 in an elevated event last week, losing -3.5 strokes in the short game department, which is typically his strength. We are once again dodging the big three, with all of them still in our pocket. If each of them win a major this year, we are going to do our best to try be on each one of them when they do. This week belongs to Max!
Yearly Earnings - $2,134,939
Yearly Cuts Made - 7/8
Andrew Putters - Rory McIlroy
Alternate - Jason Day
The world’s most elite talent in Rory McIlroy has not been able to put it all together for four days, in the states, for some time now. That fact is not going to stop me this week. Yes, he is still the number two-ranked player in my model, but that's not all. He is also a past winner of The Players. Also, I love to see him come up a little short the week before. He usually strings together a great week right after a good week. Rory takes it down this week.
Yearly Earnings - $2,220,558
Yearly Cuts Made - 6/8
Mia The Model - Scottie Scheffler
Alternate - Patrick Cantlay
Byron T20
TeeOff T20
Aggregated Results
One of the significant differences you will notice is that I attached the aforementioned percent weight to each player when I randomized the list for the week. That means an option like Rory McIlroy got rewarded for being a better option for our models (which we see with his 15.5% chance) all the way down to the bottom of our board in Tom Hoge, Keegan Bradley and Keith Mitchell – four golfers that received 2.5% of the projected pick equity.
We agreed on randomizing the list five times to settle on the name, and Mia has decided she wants to roll with Scottie Scheffler this week as the selection and Patrick Cantlay as the alternate. (All names used previously were removed).
Let us know what you think of her chances this week!
Yearly Earnings - $2,501,086
Yearly Cuts Made - 6/8
