One and Done Selections - The Masters

In this feature, our golf staff of Joe Nicely, Spencer Aguiar, Andrew Putters, Josh Bennett, Byron Lindeque and our special guest will provide their weekly golf picks every Wednesday. The purpose of this article is to present you with alternative options to consider and hopefully make your selection a much easier process weekly. With that plan in mind, let's get started!

Joe Nicely - Cameron Smith

Alternate - Hideki Matsuyama

It’s been a rough start to this OAD contest for me, which leaves me forced to get creative already. While there are several great plays available for this week’s Masters, I’ll take what might be considered an alternate route with Cameron Smith.

The uber-talented Aussie bolted to the upstart LIV Golf league following a spectacular season in which he won the Tournament of Champions, The Players, and the Open Championship at St. Andrews. Smith also closed out the calendar year with a victory at the Australian PGA Championship in his home country just for good measure.

While it may feel as though he won everything in 2022, Smith does have some unfinished business in Georgia to attend to, as he fell short in a final-round duel with Scottie Scheffler in last year’s Masters, ultimately settling for a share of third place in what was his third consecutive top-10 finish at Augusta National.

He looks to finish the job this year, and while it’s fair to question how sharp his game has remained with a 2023 schedule that’s consisted of nothing but hit-and-giggles to this point, Smith’s skill set is a natural fit for this event. With only four opportunities to use him - or any LIV player - in this contest, I’ll take my chances on the Aussie this week.

Yearly Earnings - $2,295,081
Yearly Cuts Made - 11/12

Josh Bennett - Jordan Spieth

Alternate - Justin Thomas

We’ve seen over the years for the Masters that course history is extremely important. Those that know how to play Augusta can usually get around it better than others even when they aren’t in top form, many golfers have proven this to be true over the years. So, that’s pretty much my only criteria this week. To be completely honest, if I hadn’t read quotes the last couple days about Tiger and his camp having concerns about the hard walk of Augusta, I’d just lock him in. Since he himself sounds concerned about it, I’m moving elsewhere to the next best in my (only) criteria of golfers I haven’t used yet. Spieth already has a green jacket, a couple runner ups, a couple third place finishes, this is just a place Spieth can get around with success even in poor form. I have no doubt we will see Spieth in contention again this year as he appears to be back to the Spieth we were used to seeing a few years ago.

Yearly Earnings - $4,285,687
Yearly Cuts Made - 9/12

Spencer Aguiar - Rory McIlroy

Alternate - Tony Finau

Sure, Rory McIlroy has pressure on his shoulders as he goes for history this weekend at Augusta National, but my numbers have never believed more in his chances than they do this week.

McIlroy is typically undone in my model from a projection standpoint when we look at a shaky three-putt avoidance total. However, his 10th-place grade in that category this season has him trending entering the week.

All it takes is one win for us to get back into this contest. And all it takes is one win for Rory at Augusta to capture the career grand slam. Let's make both of those things a reality!

Yearly Earnings - $1,567,729
Yearly Cuts Made - 8/12

Byron Lindeque - Jon Rahm

What were we thinking playing Lucas Glover in a one and done? Yikes.

It. Is. Masters. Week. We said we were going to save our Blue Chip players for this week and we are now rolling out the big guns. Bernard Langer is going to …. Just kidding. Jon Rahm, folks. Jon. Rahm. He is one of the best long iron players on the planet, and based off the odds market, will be the least popular option of the BIG 3 (Scottie Scheffler + Rory McIlroy).

Rahm has the length off the tee, the ability to put Par 5s into headlocks, birdie 500+ yard Par 4s, and get up and down from just about anywhere. His short game has been sensational lately which is going to be another key area of the game he will have an edge on the field. The likelihood that one of the BIG 3 win this week, is about 30% based off their combined odds. Rahm provides us with a chalky pivot if there is such a thing. It is go time, Jonny boy!

Yearly Earnings - $3,104,222
Yearly Cuts Made - 11/12

Andrew Putters - To Come?

Alternate -

Yearly Earnings - $2,812,219
Yearly Cuts Made - 8/12

Mia The Model - Sam Burns

Alternate -Cameron Smith

Aggregated Results

One of the significant differences you will notice is that I attached the aforementioned percent weight to each player when I randomized the list for the week. That means an option like Rory McIlroy got rewarded for being a better option for our models (which we see with his 11% chance) all the way down to the bottom of our board in Tommy Fleetwood, Tom Hoge, Sam Burns and Keith Mitchell – four golfers that received 2.5% of the projected pick equity.

We agreed on randomizing the list five times to settle on the name, and Mia has decided she wants to roll with Sam Burns this week as the selection and Cameron Smith as the alternate. (All names used previously were removed).

Let us know what you think of her chances this week!

Yearly Earnings - $8,708,572
