Joe Nicely - Tommy Fleetwood

I’ll try to keep an ace in the hole for next week’s Open Championship and take a stab with Tommy Fleetwood this week in Scotland. The Englishman has always performed a bit better on European soil and logged a runner-up at The Renaissance Club two years ago. This year has been a nice bounce-back campaign for Fleetwood and I look for that to continue this week.

I was saving Jon Rahm for next week's Open Championship, but let's pull a switcharoo and worry about that tournament when it arrives. Rahm ranks first in this field in total driving, strokes gained in windy conditions and GIR percentage, and the shaky around-the-green game might get a massive boost because of Rahm's ability to putt from off the surface. Think of this as more of a three-putt avoidance course than your typical around-the-green test.

I didn't do any research, but sharp markets love both these options. That is good enough for me.

Matt Miller - Cameron Smith

After a total flop out of Webb Simpson last week, I need some luck from the mullett to turn around my success. Moving past the tremendous hair and mustache combo, there is a lot to like about Cam Smith at the Renaissance Club. Statistically, Cam fits the mold of what I am looking for this week. He ranks second in the field on approach over his last 36 rounds, 11th in putting and 13th around the greens. His downfall has been his lack of accuracy off the tee. That said, looking at the leaderboard and their statistics from last year's event at this course, accuracy off the tee was not a major indicator of good results.

This event can play one of two ways: a -22 birdie fest like we saw last year with Min Woo Lee or a -11 struggle like we saw in Aaron Rai's victory due to some intense wind. Cam Smith is a solid play for either of the two scenarios. If this plays as a birdie fest, Smith rates 8th in the field in opportunities gained over his last 36 rounds and second in the field in birdie or better gained. If it plays tough with wind, Smith is a strong wind player and can win in tough conditions as we witnessed at this year's Players Championship.

I think it’s going to be important this week to play someone that is comfortable in the wind. Good driving ability and solid iron play will also be an asset. Viktor fits the bill for me this week.

I really tried to not do this but he is the most talented player in the field. Not to mention hungry for the competition.
