One and Done Selections - PGA Championship

In this feature, our golf staff of Joe Nicely, Spencer Aguiar, Andrew Putters, Owen Vrabel, Matt Miller and Josh Bennett will provide their weekly golf picks every Wednesday. The purpose of this article is to present you with alternative options to consider and hopefully make your selection a much easier process weekly. With that plan in mind, let's get started!

Joe Nicely - Cameron Smith

Alternate - Xander Schauffele

Maybe I’m chasing things, but I’m still kicking myself for not playing Cam Smith at the Masters. According to all I’ve seen over the last couple of weeks when researching Southern Hills Country Club, the Oklahoma layout might be the closest thing we’ll see to Augusta National until we head back to Georgia next April.

Smith is a special kind of player in that he doesn’t fit every golf course, but has winning upside on those tracks that do suit his game. With wide fairways and shaved runoffs around the greens, I look for Southern Hills to be right in his wheelhouse

Yearly Earnings - $5,319,648
Yearly Cuts Made - 13/17

Josh Bennett - Xander Schauffele

Alternate - Scottie Scheffler

I'm going a little off the rails this week, there are a lot bigger names on the board but I'm really liking Xander this week. I also would be pretty surprised if anyone picked him in this contest, so if he can get a win or even a top 5 I should be able to do some moving on the leaderboard this week. It's not a typical event people love to play Xander in. People love to call him the no-cut, limited field specialist. That's definitely not what we got this week. Full-field, stars are everywhere, with normal cut lines, and difficult conditions. The thing that makes me lean towards him this week is that he is gaining strokes recently in all the major categories (plus gains putting on Bent if you care about that stuff). Only a couple of people in the field can say that this week, and being able to play well in all facets of the game is going to work out in his favor in an event where par will be a good score. It's also worth noting that he is in the wave of tee times that supposedly gets the better weather draw. Things seem to be lining up for Xander this week to finally prove to the world he can win on the big stage and I'm not going to miss it!

Spencer Aguiar - Patrick Cantlay

Alternate - Cameron Smith

I find myself in a position where this pick goes against multiple trends/advantages. For starters, Cantlay is technically on the "wrong" side of the draw when we look at early weather splits, and it didn't help that the two players I would have most heavily considered not only drew the right side but were already used by me earlier in the year. Those golfers were none other than Jordan Spieth and the soon-to-be 2022 PGA Championship winner Rory McIlroy, but we have to plant our flag somewhere.

Weather issues aside, Cantlay grades as one of the pristine upside climbers in my model - ranking first in par-four average, second in scrambling and first on fast Bentgrass greens. The fifth-ranked player in the world is a hybrid version of typical American golf and European style, which means he has the driving ability to contend at a PGA Championship but also the short game that you would find from an Open Championship winner. I believe that a combination of the two will be what is needed to get across the finish line in Tulsa so give me the option that fits that mold better than anyone I have left at my disposal.

Yearly Earnings - $6,206,371
Yearly Cuts Made - 16/17

Matt Miller - Scottie Scheffler

Alternate -

This week I will be using the world's number one, Scottie Scheffler. He is the hottest golfer in the world and sets up extremely well for this course. Scheffler has won three of his last six starts and he has finished inside the top-15 in all but one of them. He has gained over five strokes tee to green in five of his last six tournaments and has not lost strokes around the green since November of 2021.
I could go on all day about statistics and reasons to like Scheffler this week. I am also aware that as amazing as he is, he has to cool off at some point. Right? I regret not using him already but I would like to strike while the iron is still (hopefully) hot. I don't want to save Scheffler and then have him cool off a little bit. Let's stay hot for one more week Scottie.

Yearly Earnings - $4,558,314
Yearly Cuts Made - 13/17

Andrew Putters - Scottie Scheffler

Alternate - Jordan Spieth

It is March 29, 1987, we are standing in the Pontiac Silverdome in Pontiac, Michigan with 93,173 people watching.  Up until this point, no one has ever slammed Andre the Giant, and he is in total domination throughout the World Wrestling Federation.  That is until this day.  A guy named Hulk Hogan came along, picked up The Giant over his head, and slammed him to the matt, and in a complete upset, he won the Heavyweight Championship Belt. Guess what folks??? This is not Wrestlemania, and I do not see Hulk Hogan walking around Southern Hills this week.  So with that being said, until someone body slams Scottie, I am ALL IN!  He has been in complete domination mode since January.  Winning 3 of his last 5 stroke-play events and winning the WGC Matchplay.  He also has a not-so-shabby 7 top 10 finishes this season. He bombs it off the tee, hits his irons well, and has shown he does not shy away from the big moment.  Oh yeah, he also said recently that Southern Hills is his favorite course to play.  Scottie takes this one down, halfway to the GRANDSLAM!!!!

Yearly Earnings - $2,873,286
Yearly Cuts Made - 10/17

Owen Vrabel - Jordan Spieth

Yearly Earnings - $7,201,421
Yearly Cuts Made - 15/17
