One and Done Selections - Memorial
Joe Nicely - Hideki Matsuyama
Alternate - Gary Woodland
I'm not sure if we can label the reigning Masters champion as "flying under the radar", but that's the feeling I'm getting with Hideki Matsuyama this week, as the chatter surrounding the Memorial seems to be focused on other players.
It feels as though his Masters' momentum might have been derailed a bit by his return to Japan after winning at Augusta - and the mandated COVID quarantine that it required - but he's actually been very good in his two post-Masters starts. Matsuyama gained 3.2 strokes on Approach in a knock-the-rust-off outing at the Byron Nelson and followed up with a sneaky-good top-25 at the PGA Championship, a start in which he gained a blistering 10.3 strokes T2G and 6.4 on Approach, but in true Hideki fashion, lost 3.3 strokes with the putter. He brings that under-the-radar form to a Muirfield layout on which he won back in 2014 and has posted two top-six finishes in subsequent years.

Spencer Aguiar - Patrick Reed
Alternate - Hideki Matsuyama
I've used the top-10 options of my model heading into the Memorial, which means I am going to have to go a little further down the list than I care for when trying to find my man in Ohio.
I am going into the event with the mindset that short game prowess has an opportunity to outweigh everything else, and it shouldn't hurt matter that Reed ranks fifth on fast bentgrass greens over his last 50 rounds, as well as being sixth in sand save percentage and 13th in strokes gained around the green over the last two years of my model. Reed is never someone that typically grades out well for me from a statistical perspective (just 15th here this week), but these hard, tough venues always tend to provide a little extra kick in his step.

Josh Bennett - Matthew Fitzpatrick
Alternate - Joaquin Niemann
I don’t know about you guys, but with all the talk around the changes to Muirfield all I lean towards are good short game players. Smaller fairways and harder greens scream a more difficult course, and it was already difficult, to begin with. Fitzpatrick is the guy built for a course like this. He hits it very straight off the tee so the more narrow fairways will be less of an issue. He’s also gained a little bit of length recently which will really help out with the added length to the course. He hits a fair number of greens, but he really does his work around and on the greens. He’s great around the greens and he is one of (if not the best) putters in the field. Given that there likely won’t be a ton of scoring throughout the weekend, a guy like Fitzpatrick that can work his way around a golf course and keep bogey off the scorecard is a great guy to target for a successful week. Looking for Matt to continue his good track record at this event and get me back on track after a few rough weeks.

Andrew Putters - Tony Finau
Alternate - Patrick Reed
It’s time for top-five Tony. This course is long, long, long. No yardage is too much for Tony. Fairways & Greens are a must. Now, this is a new course layout, but Tony had success last year, and he has mentioned that he has had this tournament circled for almost a year. It was the one that got away. Top-five Tony will not disappoint this week.
