One and Done Selections - John Deere Classic
In this feature, our golf staff of Joe Nicely, Spencer Aguiar, Andrew Putters, Owen Vrabel, Matt Miller and Josh Bennett will provide their weekly golf picks every Wednesday. The purpose of this article is to present you with alternative options to consider and hopefully make your selection a much easier process weekly. With that plan in mind, let's get started!
Joe Nicely - Nick Hardy
Alternate - Adam Hadwin
Are you ready for the Hardy Party? It's a homecoming of sorts for the Illinois native that was the two-time Big 10 Individual Champion while playing at the University of Illinois. Hardy has ties to this area and this event, as he's made the cut in two previous John Deere starts that he made on sponsor's exemptions in 2017 and 2018. He returns home playing the best golf of his young career and fresh off strong finishes at the RBC Canadian Open, U.S. Open, and last week's Travelers. Hardy grades out first in this week's field in Birdies or Better Gained over the last 12 rounds and I look for him to stay hot on this familiar TPC Deere Run layout.
Yearly Earnings - $6,401,315
Yearly Cuts Made - 18/23
Josh Bennett - Adam Hadwin
Alternate - Maverick McNealy
I guess I’ll go with Haddy this week, it seems pretty impossible to be confident in any player in this field, but Haddy is as good as it can get for me. He’s in some really good form and has been competing well in the bigger and better fields (USO & Memorial for example), so I don’t think it’s a stretch to assume he can dominate this field if he plays up to the standards he’s set the last few weeks. I have no clue if history in this event from a long time ago means anything, but it certainly can’t be a negative. The last two times he played this event were in 2015 and 2016 and he finished 18th and 8th, respectively, in those events. In a field this gross, we can’t go wrong with a guy in good form that seemingly has played well here before, so it’s Hadwin for me and not sure I’d even consider anyone else.
Yearly Earnings - $5,305,651
Yearly Cuts Made - 18/23

Spencer Aguiar - Patrick Rodgers
Alternate - Alex Smalley
Yearly Earnings - $7,125,726
Yearly Cuts Made - 21/23
Matt Miller - Webb Simpson
Alternate -
This week was a tough choice for OAD because quite frankly I wasn't too interested in taking anyone. The field is one of the weakest we will see all year and it feels like a good week to take off and enjoy the holiday. That said, the show goes on and I ultimately landed on Webb Simpson.
Webb battled some injuries early in the year and didn't quite look himself. Despite the disappointing season overall, we've seen some signs of life lately. He finished T13 last week at the Travelers, his best result since the RSM last November. He also finished T20 at the Charles Schwab and T27 at the PGA Championship last month. In his last five measured events, Webb has gained strokes off the tee and on approach in all five. I'm not ready to say he's fully back but he's certainly back enough to win in this field.
Yearly Earnings - $5,319,155
Yearly Cuts Made - 16/23
Andrew Putters - Webb Simpson
Alternate - Scott Stallings
I know Webb’s game has not been sharp as of late, but he is still the best player in the field this week. The TPC Deere Run requires a strong approach game, which Webb can easily get dialed in. I love playing a veteran in tournaments when the field is a little weak. I know he’s the odds-on favorite and it’s for a reason.
Yearly Earnings - $3,748,647
Yearly Cuts Made - 15/23
Owen Vrabel - Christiaan Bezuidenhout
Yearly Cuts Made - 19/23
