BALLER MOVE: Add in 12+ Team Leagues
OWNED IN: 32% of Yahoo! leagues
ANALYSIS: The Mariners have rotated through a handful of different closers ever since Hunter Strickland went on the injured list after the third game of the season. The one who has impressed the most is journeyman left-hander Roenis Elias, who is sporting a 2-0 record, five saves, a 2.78 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and a 26.0% strikeout rate coming out of the pen for the first time.
Elias' numbers look legit, as he's also sporting a 2.67 FIP - although his 4.15 xFIP is in part thanks to a very low 4.0% HR/FB rate, which will probably come up in time. However, a closer look at his xStats shows just how well Elias is dealing this season. His opponent xSlash line is a wickedly low .180/.232/.259, and opponents are only barreling the ball 1.6% of the time - all numbers that are in the top 5% of the league.
Elias may not hold down the closing role for long, especially with Strickland on the mend, but for now he's worth adding in 12-teamers for ratio help and the occasional save.
