ANALYSIS: Rodney McGruder has been pushed into an early season role for the Miami Heat because of injuries to Justise Winslow (hamstring), Wayne Ellington (ankle) and Dion Waiters (ankle). Winslow and Ellington are expected to be back shortly, and Waiters status remains unknown as of this time.
During their absences to begin the 2018 season, McGruder has been phenomenal. He set a career-high in scoring on October 18th against the Wizards, posting 20 points to go along with eight rebounds, six assists, three triples and one block. His 7-for-12 shooting from the floor and 3-for-3 from the charity stripe made him a category league magician on the night. On October 20th, the 27-year-old one-upped his performance, tallying 19 points with 10 rebounds, two assists, two steals, one block and four three-pointers in 42 minutes against the Hornets.
McGruder's play will force Head Coach Erik Spoelstra to consider giving him extra minutes this season, even once Winslow, Ellington and Waiters return. However, the former Kansas State product will not be this good all year long and should be viewed only as a quality streamer for now. He is worth an add for the time being, but you should be prepared to cut him if he cools off or his role changes.
