ANALYSIS: The Knicks have captivated basketball fans over the past couple of years with a unique blend of seasoned-experience and untapped youth on the roster, and through necessity, 2021 first-rounder (25th overall) Quentin Grimes has impressively capitalized on his floor-time opportunity. The 2020-21 AAC POY capped off his college career averaging 17.8 points, 5.7 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.4 steals, and 3.3 threes out of 8.3 attempts (40.3%) per game in 32.8 MP, plus converting on a career-high 78.8% of FT, for the 28-4 Houston Cougars. Grimes hasn't seen any G League time this season, and so not surprisingly, he saw just 58 total minutes across nine games from October through November (still hitting 5-13 from deep (38.5%).
When the need arose for reinforcements in the NYK backcourt in December, Grimes' number was called to the tune of 371 MP across the 20 games since (starting two), accumulating 138 total points, 16 steals, and 36 long-range conversions at a 39.1% clip. His usage has receded to a more realistic 13.8% this month from 20.5% in December, but his January true shooting percentage of .598 is his season-best for a full month, and his ORtg/DRtg of 118/111 evidences the well-rounded play indicated by his growing steal totals. The arrival of Cam Reddish and the availability of other NYK guards could present obstacles for the short-term utilization of Quentin Grimes, but with five double-digit scoring performances since his 27-point explosion of 12/12/21 and a rock-solid, ever-expanding shooting touch, he could be an under-the-radar gem worth uncovering in deeper formats.
