For years, the catcher position has been one of the least productive offensive positions in baseball.
But in 2024, we have five catchers who are currently ranked inside the top 100 fantasy rankings, making them very valuable commodities in fantasy baseball.
Let's take a look at the top ten rated catchers so far this season and make some predictions about what the top ten will look like at the end of the fantasy baseball season.

Current Top 10 Catchers for Fantasy Baseball
Hitter | R | HR | RBI | SB | AVG |
William Contreras | 49 | 8 | 46 | 4 | 0.309 |
Adley Rutschman | 34 | 12 | 43 | 1 | 0.301 |
Salvador Perez | 25 | 10 | 42 | 0 | 0.304 |
Will Smith | 33 | 9 | 38 | 0 | 0.292 |
David Fry | 28 | 8 | 28 | 4 | 0.336 |
Ryan Jeffers | 25 | 12 | 36 | 2 | 0.233 |
Connor Wong | 22 | 5 | 21 | 2 | 0.331 |
Yainer Diaz | 22 | 7 | 33 | 0 | 0.258 |
Elias Diaz | 20 | 5 | 27 | 0 | 0.301 |
J.T. Realmuto | 28 | 7 | 20 | 1 | 0.265 |
Contreras and Rutschman are in a tier of their own with elite production across four of the main five offensive categories and it's hard to see any other catchers challenging them for the top two spots.
Perez and Smith are in another distinct second tier of their own with the surprising production of David Fry not far behind.
There's a huge gap between Fry's production and the sixth-rated catcher Ryan Jeffers, who ranks 150th. Jeffers has similar power numbers, but his .233 batting average drags him down quite a bit. Connor Wong is just the opposite - he doesn't hit for much power but has the best average of any full-time catcher (David Fry plays in the outfield and both corner infield positions) at .331.
Projected Top 10 Catchers for Fantasy Baseball
Taking into account the rest of the season projections from ATC and others (plus my own opinion), here's how I see the final top ten catcher rankings shaking out by the end of this season.
- William Contreras
- Adley Rutschman
- Will Smith
- Salvador Perez
- Yanier Diaz
- J.T. Realmuto
- Ryan Jeffers
- David Fry
- Cal Raleigh
- Elias Diaz
I think the top four remain pretty much the same and that we see Yanier Diaz and Realmuto work their way up the ranks as the season goes along. Fry isn't an everyday player and is sure to have some regression in the average department.
While Wong has been a great story, I don't think he hangs in the top ten all season and we get someone like Cal Raleigh, who has 11 home runs this season (second among all catchers) move up to take his place.
