Zack Britton Demoted From Closer Role
3 years agoNew York Yankees relief pitcher Zack Britton spoke to manager Aaron Boone, telling him that he felt he doesn't deserve the role of closer with Aroldis Chapman (elbow) sidelined. Britton is coming off of a blown save against the White Sox- his second of the month- where he served up a walk-off homer. The lefty didn't make his first appearance of the year until June as he was rehabbing from elbow surgery, then missed time due to a hamstring injury, but he hasn't been effective when healthy, as evidenced by his 6.32 ERA and 1.66 WHIP. Britton was once one of baseball's better closers, making it likely that he turns things around at some point, though if it happens, it will occur during lower leverage situations. Expect Jonathan Loaisiga and Chad Green to get the majority of the save chances until Chapman returns.
