Yoenis Cespedes Likely To Make Mets Opening Day Roster
5 years agoThe delayed start to the 2020 season makes it likely that New York Mets outfielder Yoenis Cespedes (heel, ankle) will make the Mets' Opening Day roster. Before spring training was suspended, Cespedes had progressed to running to first base at full speed and hitting regularly in simulated games. Cespedes was in the midst of progressing from the heel and ankle injuries that had kept him sidelined since mid-July 2018. With rosters potentially being expanded when the season eventually begins, the Mets can utilize Cespedes as a pinch-hitter even if he is not 100-percent healthy. Of course, even if fully recovered, given his recent injury history and the Mets crowded outfield situation, consistent playing time is still not a given in 2020. That said, owners should continue to monitor this situation. If Cespedes is healthy heading into the season opener, he's certainly worth a draft selection in deep mixed leagues and NL-only formats.
