3 days agoThe New York Yankees announced on Wednesday that they placed infielder DJ LeMahieu (calf) on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to March 24) with a left-calf strain. LeMahieu's fantasy stock has fallen off a cliff the last few years. He was injured earlier this month and will not be ready for the start of the 2025 regular season. The good news is that the 36-year-old veteran has been eased into baseball activities, but he's without a timetable for a return. With LeMahieu on the shelf, Oswaldo Cabrera will open the year as the team's starting third baseman. Depending on how Cabrera is playing when LeMahieu is ready to return, it's possible that LeMahieu will be relegated to a bench role as a corner-infield option for the Yanks. The former three-time All-Star and two-time batting champion played in just 67 games in 2024 due to injuries and slashed a lowly .204/.269/.259 with a career-worst .527 OPS.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

2 weeks agoNew York Yankees manager Aaron Boone said that infielder DJ LeMahieu (calf) is "moving the needle" in his recovery from a left-calf strain and has been hitting in camp. LeMahieu suffered the calf injury over two weeks ago, and while he appears to be improving, it's likely that he'll start the 2025 regular season on the injured list with Opening Day coming next Thursday. After a disastrous 2024 campaign in which he hit just .204/.269/.259 with two home runs and 26 RBI in only 67 games due to injuries, the 36-year-old veteran's fantasy stock has tanked after his latest calf injury. LeMahieu will be in play for plenty of playing time at third base in the Bronx once he's healthy, but Oswaldo Cabrera is set to open the season there and could keep LeMahieu relegated to more of a bench role if he performs well in the early going. Fantasy managers can avoid LeMahieu in mixed leagues.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

3 weeks agoAn MRI exam on New York Yankees infielder DJ LeMahieu (calf) on Wednesday showed that he's dealing with a left-calf strain, per Newsday's Erik Boland. LeMahieu will be shut down from baseball activities for at least a "couple of weeks." He has yet to talk about the MRI results with the team doctor, so there's currently no timetable for his return. The 36-year-old veteran injured his left calf in a Grapefruit League game last weekend. The Yankees haven't made any declarations about his Opening Day status at the end of March, but the way things currently look, we'd be surprised if LeMahieu didn't start the 2025 regular season on the injured list. The former second-round pick of the Chicago Cubs in 2009 out of LSU has won two batting titles in his career but has fallen off drastically the last few seasons. He played in only 67 games in 2024 and should be avoided in all mixed fantasy leagues. Oswaldo Cabrera is next in line to start at third base for the Yanks.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

4 weeks agoNew York Yankees third baseman DJ LeMahieu (calf) is set to undergo an MRI on Tuesday. LeMahieu sustained this calf injury during Saturday's Grapefruit League contest. Over the weekend, LeMahieu said that he will likely be out for "a little bit." Fantasy managers should monitor his status after the MRI as it will likely provide clarity on his status. Currently, LeMahieu is slated to be the team's primary third baseman. Last season, the 36-year-old posted a .204/.265/.259 slash line across 67 contests. He only went deep twice but showed a strong eye at the plate as he struck out at a strong 15.4 percent rate. During the 2023 season, LeMahieu held a .243/.327/.390 line across 136 contests. If LeMahieu were to miss time early in the season, Oswaldo Cabrera or Oswald Peraza would be candidates to move up the depth chart.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller

4 weeks agoNew York Yankees infielder DJ LeMahieu (calf) suffered a calf injury during Saturday's spring training contest. LeMahieu tweaked a calf muscle during his second at-bat of the afternoon. After the game, manager Aaron Boone noted that the injury is "a little concerning." Fantasy managers should continue monitoring his status, but seeing that the team is concerned could suggest he may be sidelined for a period of time. Last season, the 36-year-old appeared in just 67 contests and held a career-worst .204/.269/.259 slash line. He tallied just two long balls and five doubles. He generated a modest 37.6 percent hard-hit rate but showed a strong eye at the plate, striking out at a 15.6 percent rate. While he is sidelined, Oswaldo Cabrera and Oswald Peraza will likely see an increase in playing time at the hot corner.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller
