Xander Schauffele Back At One Of His Happiest Hunting Grounds
1 year agoIn his Tuesday afternoon press conference, Xander Schauffele characterized his 2023 season as a "weird year," as an early season back issue cost him a chance to play one of his favorite tournaments in Maui, and despite a run of 18 starts without a missed cut, Schauffele hasn't been able to break the seal on a victory since last summer's Scottish Open. If there were ever a venue for the San Diego native to get his mojo back, it would have to be here at Eastlake. After winning in his debut in 2017, he has yet to finish outside the top seven here in his next six appearances and leads the field in total strokes gained at the Tour Championship on a per-round basis. Starting seven shots back of World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler isn't exactly an ideal situation in his quest to break his winless drought, but if there's anyone in the chase pack with the firepower to make a charge up the leaderboard, look no further than Eastlake's 2017 champion.
