Wilyer Abreu Looking To Play Monday
2 years agoBoston Red Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu (hand) hurt his hand on defense during the last play of Sunday's 3-2 loss against the Toronto Blue Jays. However, the 24-year-old told reporters after the game that he thinks he'll be available Monday against the Texas Rangers, according to Ian Browne of MLB.com. Abreu has shown an ability to hit in his 19 games this season, as he's slashed .370/.443/.519 with one home run, eight runs, 10 RBI, and three stolen bases. The rookie is currently on the strong side of a platoon but is still a decent deep-league option for fantasy managers targeting runs, power, and speed.

Wilyer Abreu To Make Spring Debut On Saturday, Could Be Ready For Opening Day
6 days agoBoston Red Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu (illness) will make his Grapefruit League debut on Saturday against the Atlanta Braves after gaining clearance from recent tests. Manager Alex Cora now thinks it's possible for Abreu to be ready for Opening Day in late March, which is a change from a week ago when the team was uncertain if he'd be ready. A gastrointestinal virus hit the 25-year-old particularly hard in camp and has prevented him from playing in any spring games until this point. However, he's feeling good enough to play this weekend and will have a few weeks to get up to speed before Opening Day. Boston could still ease Abreu into action when real games kick off as he gets his conditioning to where it needs to be. When fully healthy, Abreu is expected to see most of the time as the team's starting right fielder in 2025.

Wilyer Abreu May Not Be Ready For Opening Day
2 weeks agoThe Athletic's Jen McCaffrey writes that it's looking more and more likely that outfielder Wilyer Abreu (illness) won't be ready for Opening Day at the end of March. Manager Alex Cora noted that Abreu is pretty behind in spring training and is still only tracking pitches and not swinging yet off a machine. The 25-year-old has been dealing with gastrointestinal issue in camp that has really hit him hard, preventing him from playing in any Grapefruit League games to this point. While it looks likely that he will begin the year on the injured list, he probably won't be out for long. Top prospect Roman Anthony (illness) has also been dealing with an illness in camp, but Abreu's illness could give him a much better shot at making the Opening Day roster. Veteran Rob Refsnyder could also be asked to fill in in right field in a pinch to open the year if Abreu is still not ready.

Wilyer Abreu Swinging A Bat, Still Questionable For Opening Day
2 weeks agoBoston Red Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu (illness) has begun swinging a bat but remains questionable for Opening Day. Abreu is up to "40 swings" and has begun playing catch but manager Alex Cora is not guaranteeing he will be ready in time for the season opener. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his status during spring training. Abreu has been battling an illness during the start of camp and is even dealing with some weight loss as well. Last season, the 25-year-old received his first extended look at the major leagues and held a solid .253/.322/.459 line with 15 home runs. He swiped eight bags and generated an elite 50.4 percent hard-hit rate. However, he struck out at a high 28.0 percent rate. If he were to miss time early in the season, top prospect Roman Anthony could earn a starting role in right field.

Wilyer Abreu Still Not Doing Baseball Activities
3 weeks agoMass Live's Christopher Smith reports that Boston Red Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu (illness) continues to deal with a viral gastrointestinal illness and hasn't resumed baseball activities in camp. "He can work out. He cannot do baseball activities yet," manager Alex Cora said Tuesday. Abreu won a Gold Glove in the outfield and finished sixth in the American League Rookie of the Year voting in 2024, so he should be guaranteed the strong side of a platoon, at the very least, in right field in 2025. He finished with 17 defensive runs saved in 921 1/3 innings and also hit .253 with a .322 on-base percentage, .459 slugging percentage, .781 OPS, 15 homers, 33 doubles, 58 RBI and 59 runs in 132 games (447 plate appearances). Abreu is day-to-day for now and has plenty of time to put some weight back on that he lost during his illness before Opening Day in late March.
