Wilmer Font Could Join Dodgers Bullpen
7 years agoLos Angeles Dodgers pitcher Wilmer Font has a good chance to make the roster as a bullpen arm in 2018. He is making what is likely his last start in spring training Tuesday. Font lit up the Pacific Coast League in 2017 and was named the league's Pitcher of the Year. He was called up in September but was a non-factor in his appearances. In the minors, he struck out an eye-popping 178 batters in 134 1/3 innings and held a 1.11 WHIP. This spring, he's had a 2.25 ERA over two outings and four innings. He's also struck out six batters. With the shoulder injury to Tom Koehler, there's now an opening to be the bridge to closer Kenley Jansen. Font would compete with Ross Stripling for the role, but he has more upside than Stripling. Alternatively, Font could be used for the occasional spot start. Players in leagues that count holds should monitor Font until his actual role is announced.
