William Byron Should Be Fast But Only Contend
1 year agoWilliam Byron enters tomorrow's race at Texas in a tie for the points lead with Martin Truex, Jr. Byron leads the Cup Series this season in numerous categories including wins, top tens, laps led, fastest laps, average speed, and races with a pass for the lead. His prospects of advancing to the Round of 8 seem almost automatic with no bad luck, but a win seems unlikely. Byron was passed for the lead seven times at the most similar track type in Charlotte's Coca-Cola 600, usually after restarts. His 18th-place qualifying position was mediocre. Additionally, despite leading for the season with a speed percentile of 79.40%, he only ranks fifth in intermediate speed. Byron will almost certainly run in the top ten and probably finish there, but he is unlikely to win.
