William Byron A High-Risk, High-Reward Option At Auto Club
2 years agoAs has been the case for much of William Byron's career, he's a high-risk, high-reward option at Auto Club Speedway this weekend for the Pala Casino 400. Although he's never finished better than 15th here in four career Cup Series starts, Byron was a legitimate race-winning contender in this event one year ago before getting caught up in a wreck with Tyler Reddick. Additionally, it's worth noting that Byron has led at least one lap in all four of his Cup Series starts at Auto Club Speedway. When looking at comparable track speed for this weekend's race, it's best to take a look at other high-wear intermediate tracks, because those require a level of skill from the driver when it comes to managing their tires over the long run to maintain speed throughout. On that track type last season, Byron ranked 2nd to only Joey Logano in speed, and here at Auto Club specifically, Byron's #24 Chevrolet was 3rd in Green Flag Speed in this race one year ago. He's definitely a driver to keep an eye on this Sunday, but it's nowhere near a guarantee that Byron gets a good finish.
