Whit Merrifield Fitting In With Shifts
7 years agoThe Kansas City Royals picked up their first win on Tuesday, partially thanks to some nifty defense by second baseman Whit Merrifield. Merrifield was able to erase a baserunner by turning a slick double play due to his positioning in a shift, something new for the Royals. Old-school manager Ned Yost has been one of the slowest managers in the league to adopt the shifting approach on defense, but it's already starting to pay dividends. While Merrifield gets credit for the glove work, starting pitcher Jakob Junis got some support in his overall line by the new locations for the fielders. It's early in the season, but if the team can keep working their shifts this well, this may bolster the performances of their pitching staff as well.
