Walker Janek Goes 28th Overall To Houston
4 months agoThe Houston Astros selected catcher Walker Janek from Sam Houston with the 28th overall selection in the 2024 MLB Draft. Janek was overlooked when coming out of high school but quickly shot up draft boards after performing exceptionally well across three seasons at Sam Houston. MLB.com considers Janek the best catching prospect in this year's class. This season, Janek posted a .368/.480/.714 line with 17 home runs, 13 stolen bases, 58 RBI, and a stellar 40:45 BB:K ratio en route to winning the Buster Posey Award that is given to the top catcher in the nation. Scouts praise the 21-year-old's impressive raw power and bat speed. In addition, while he has the strength to launch balls into the seats, he also possesses patience in the box, which is shown in his BB:K ratio. On the defensive side of the game, Janek is known for having a strong arm to limit runners and was also named USA's Top Defensive Player of the Year. Janek will slot in as the top-catching prospect in the Space City.
