Cincinnati Reds right-hander Vladimir Gutierrez allowed four runs (three earned) over 3 1/3 innings in a 15-5 loss to the Detroit Tigers on Friday. Gutierrez struck out one and walked one while throwing just 41 of 67 pitches for strikes. The rookie hurler coughed up two homers in the start before departing early. Gutierrez has been mostly solid during his rookie season, although he has allowed nine runs in 6 1/3 innings spanning his past two starts. On the season, Gutierrez has a 9-6 record, 4.17 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, and 76 strikeouts over 99 1/3 innings of work. Gutierrez will look to bounce back in his next start, which will come against the Chicago Cubs.--Matt T - RotoBaller

The Milwaukee Brewers claimed right-hander Vladimir Gutierrez off waivers from the Miami Marlins on Friday and optioned him to Triple-A Nashville. Gutierrez allowed three earned runs on three hits (one home run) while walking two and striking out four in a four-inning relief appearance with Miami this year before being designated for assignment. The 28-year-old former undrafted free agent has experience as both a starter and reliever in his major-league career. Before appearing out of Miami's bullpen this year, Gutierrez hadn't appeared in the majors since 2022 with the Cincinnati Reds. In his 154 2/3 big-league innings over 33 outings (30 starts), Gutierrez has a 5.47 ERA and 1.53 WHIP with 72 walks and 121 K's.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

The Miami Marlins signed Cuban free-agent right-hander Vladimir Gutierrez to a minor-league contract on Friday that includes a non-roster invite to major-league spring training, according to sources. Gutierrez was rehabbing from Tommy John surgery last year and only saw 6 1/3 innings in minor-league rehab appearances in 2023. The 28-year-old appeared in 32 games (30 starts) for the Cincinnati Reds in 2021 and 2022 before going under the knife, and he went 10-12 with a 5.44 ERA (5.61 FIP) and 1.53 WHIP with 117 strikeouts and 70 walks in 150 2/3 frames. Now that he's healthy, he'll give the Marlins some depth for their starting rotation, but there's a good chance he'll begin the 2024 season in the minors with Triple-A Jacksonville.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

Cincinnati Reds right-hander Vladimir Gutierrez (elbow) pitched in a simulated game on Tuesday and is scheduled to throw an inning in the Arizona Complex League later this week. Although Gutierrez is a starter, he's being prepared for a bullpen role this season and could return as a starter in 2024. The 27-year-old had Tommy John surgery on his right elbow on July 20 of last year. "He's getting towards the end of this whole process," Bell said July 25. "Hopefully we'll be seeing him -- definitely before the end of the year -- but hopefully everything stays on track because he's doing great." Gutierrez won't really have much fantasy value in a relief role for the Reds down the stretch, whenever he's able to return.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

Cincinnati Reds starter Vladimir Gutierrez (elbow) was placed on the 60-day injured list on Wednesday morning. The move was made in order to open up a spot on the 40-man roster for fellow pitcher Bennett Sousa, who the Reds claimed off waivers from the Chicago White Sox. Gutierrez pitched to a 7.61 ERA, a 6.82 FIP, 29 strikeouts, and 24 walks in 36.2 innings for Cincinnati last season, making 10 appearances, eight of which were starts. All told, the 26-year-old has made 32 starts for the National League Central club dating back to the start of the 2021 season. He owns a lifetime 5.44 ERA and a 5.40 FIP in 150.2 career Major League innings The right-hander previously underwent Tommy John surgery this past July.--Ben Rosener - RotoBaller
