Tyler Gilbert To Serve As Opener On Tuesday
Tyler Gilbert will serve as the team's opener for Tuesday's contest against the Milwaukee Brewers, according to MLB.com's Scott Merkin. This will be Gilbert's third straight appearance in the opener role for the White Sox, with the 31-year-old southpaw throwing two shutout innings with a walk and three strikeouts his last two times out, both against the Athletics. Gilbert hasn't been good outside of his two opening assignments, surrendering five earned runs on five hits (one homer) while walking three and striking out eight in 5 2/3 relief innings. Right-hander Bryse Wilson is expected to be Chicago's bulk reliever on Tuesday against Milwaukee. Neither Gilbert, nor Wilson should be considered by those looking for sleeper streamers this week.

Tyler Gilbert Reinstated From Injured List
Tyler Gilbert (knee) from the 15-day injured list on Tuesday and optioned left-hander Brandon Eisert to Triple-A Charlotte in a corresponding move. Gilbert made two minor-league rehab appearances at Charlotte last week before the White Sox felt he was ready to join their big-league bullpen. The 31-year-old veteran southpaw won't be on the fantasy radar as he operates in a middle-relief role for the Pale Hose. He had a 3.24 ERA (4.85 FIP) and 1.44 WHIP with four strikeouts and two walks in six relief appearances over 8 1/3 innings for the Philadelphia Phillies in the majors in 2024. Over the course of his four-year big-league career (three with the Arizona Diamondbacks), Gilbert has posted a 4.23 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 68:30 K:BB in an even 100 innings over 34 outings (13 starts).

Tyler Gilbert Acquired By White Sox
Tyler Gilbert from the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday in exchange for minor-league right-hander Aaron Combs. Gilbert had been designated for assignment by the Phillies on Dec. 22. Gilbert will head to the American League in 2025 after appearing only six times out of the Phillies' bullpen in 2024. In his 8 1/3 innings pitched, he allowed three earned runs on 10 hits (one homer) while walking two and striking out four. The 31-year-old former sixth-round selection by the Phillies in 2015 out of the University of Southern California (USC) debuted in the bigs with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2021 and holds a career 4.23 ERA and 1.22 WHIP in 100 innings over 34 outings (13 starts) in his four seasons. Gilbert will give the rebuilding White Sox a swing arm in 2025, but he won't be on the fantasy radar at all.

Tyler Gilbert, Reds Agree To Minors Pact
Tyler Gilbert to a minor-league deal with an invite to big-league spring training. The 30-year-old appeared with the Arizona Diamondbacks in each of the last two seasons, working to a combined 4.32 ERA, 9.6% K-BB%, and 36.9% ground-ball rate in that time. Thirteen of his 28 appearances in the majors have been starts as he owns a 4.39 ERA across 67 2/3 innings as a starter and a 4.13 ERA across 24 frames out of the bullpen. However, all 11 of his MLB appearances last season came as a reliever as he posted a 5.19 ERA in 17 1/3 in the majors to pair with a 5.30 ERA across 30 outings (seven starts) with Triple-A Reno.

Tyler Gilbert Back From Paternity List
Tyler Gilbert from the paternity list on Wednesday and optioned right-hander Carlos Vargas to Triple-A Reno in a corresponding move. Gilbert has only thrown three innings out of Arizona's bullpen at the major-league level so far in 2023, and he's allowed one earned run on two hits while walking one and striking out two. The 29-year-old southpaw wasn't quite as good in 21 outings (five starts) for Reno, posting a 5.67 ERA, 1.41 WHIP, 19 walks and 65 innings in 54 innings pitched. There's a chance that Gilbert could see a start or two in the D-backs' starting rotation early in the second half of the season, but he'll be a desperation streaming option with a low ceiling if he does.
