1 year agoOn Saturday afternoon, Ty Gibbs qualified 11th for Sunday's NASCAR Cup Series Championship Race at Phoenix Raceway. While the end of a season can always be emotional, for Gibbs, this weekend takes on a different meaning as Monday marks the one-year anniversary of his father's passing. On November 6, 2022, just hours after his son won the Xfinity championship, JGR executive Coy Gibbs passed away in his sleep. Although this will be NASCAR's second visit to the track since Gibb's untimely passing, you have to think this particular trip will be more emotional for the second-generation racer, given the significance of the date. While events like the passing of Coy Gibbs can serve as a reminder of what really matters in life, we cannot ignore the role that emotion and tragedy can play in sports. From Brett Favre's spectacular performance on Monday Night Football the day after his father's death to Dale Jr.'s emotional victory in the first race at Daytona following his father's passing, tragedies have a way of elevating athletes. This is what I expect this weekend with Ty Gibbs. As a star on the rise, at a track he won his Xfinity championship at just one year ago, on the eve of an emotional anniversary, I expect the No. 54 to have a big day this Sunday at Phoenix.--Adam Erhardt - RotoBaller

6 days agoTy Gibbs of Joe Gibbs Racing placed ninth in Sunday's Goodyear 400 at Darlington Raceway. Beginning Sunday's race from the 11th position, Gibbs put himself behind early during the first stage after making an early pit stop. The No. 54 Toyota driver struggled to make moves and ended the first stage in 33rd. In the second stage, Gibbs and his team improved their car and, through pit strategies, finally made ground. Gibbs would end the second stage in the seventh position and score three stage points. In the final stage, Gibbs kept out of trouble and maintained his position in the top 10 throughout most of the entire stage. As a result, Gibbs ended the race with his first top-10 finish since Kansas in September 2024. This is also his third career top-10 finish at Darlington.--Sean Engel - RotoBaller

7 days agoTy Gibbs finally stopped the bleeding somewhat in last week's race at Martinsville as he had his best run and finish in an otherwise disastrous season after his crew chief Chris Gayle was replaced by Tyler Allen. Gibbs did earn the only second-place finish of his career in last year's Darlington event, but that came during a relative career hot streak while he is suffering his greatest slump now. The fact that Gayle just dominated with Denny Hamlin and gave him his first win at Martinsville in a decade suggests that Allen might be a substantially worse crew chief and Gibbs may still be in a bit of a funk personally after flipping his High Limit car three weeks ago. It wouldn't be shocking if he led the race since he did last year, but given his current negative momentum and the fact that he only qualified 11th, he likely won't.--Sean Wrona - RotoBaller

2 weeks agoTy Gibbs had his most competitive run of the season on Sunday at Martinsville when he both started and finished 13th despite the discomfort of a malfunctioning cool suit. Surprisingly, this was Gibbs' best result since he also finished 13th 12 races ago at Talladega, and it was one of his grittiest performances nonetheless. Gibbs entered the top 10 after the Stage 1 pit stop and ran in the top five for most of Stage 2 (where he ultimately finished fourth), but he was spun out by the similarly-named, similarly-sponsored Tyler Reddick for 11th and fell to 24th before later confronting him after the race. Nonetheless, the Toyotas in general and Joe Gibbs Racing cars in particular had great speed, and he was able to make up most of the ground that he had lost in what was clearly his best run since Tyler Allen took over as crew chief.--Sean Wrona - RotoBaller

2 weeks agoAfter another disappointing run at Homestead last weekend despite looking really good in practice, fantasy NASCAR players are a bit leery on how much they trust Ty Gibbs right now, and rightfully so. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver has struggled mightily this season, with an average finish of 25.7 through the first six races, and only one result better than 22nd. What's even more frustrating for fantasy players is how strong Gibbs has looked in practice and/or qualifying, which is once again the story this weekend at Martinsville Speedway. The No. 54 Toyota ended up 11th-fastest in practice at Martinsville this weekend and will roll off the starting grid from 13th place when the Cook Out 400 goes green. So the question is, should you roster Gibbs in DFS this weekend? At $7,000 on DraftKings, it's a bit enticing to roll the dice with Gibbs, but considering he has never finished better than 18th at Martinsville Speedway in five career Cup Series starts, it's probably best to just stay away once again this weekend.--Jordan McAbee
