San Francisco 49ers first round draft pick Trey Lance has been showing off his mobility and big arm at camp this week. He threw a 50-yard rocket touchdown to Trent Sherfield while rolling out to his left on Tuesday. Lance is a high-capital draft pick (he was picked third overall in the 2021 NFL Draft), but is still behind Jimmy Garoppolo on the Niners' depth chart. Keep an eye on Lance's progression this preseason and camp– should he make the leap to the starter, he offers a rushing baseline that few quarterbacks offer. Lance is currently going in the double-digit rounds, meaning he could be worth a flier and stash in the event that he takes over the 49ers offense.--bgibbons04

TSN's Dave Naylor reports that the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League have added free-agent quarterback Trey Lance to their negotiation list this week. Lance's father, Carlton, was a former cornerback for the Roughriders. The former third overall pick of the San Francisco 49ers in 2021 out of North Dakota State hasn't generated any interest in the NFL on the free-agent market and could be on the verge of heading to Canada. The 24-year-old signal-caller saw some action with the Dallas Cowboys last year with Dak Prescott (hamstring) going down with a season-ending injury, and he went 25-for-41 for 266 yards, no touchdowns and one interception in four games (one start). He spent the last two years in Dallas as the No. 3 QB behind Prescott and Cooper Rush. Since debuting in 2021 with the Niners, Lance has only five TD passes and four picks in 12 games (five starts).--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

Dallas Cowboys impending free-agent quarterback Trey Lance is expected to move on in free agency this offseason, as chief executive officer Stephen Jones said that Lance is "probably going to be looking for something different." The Cowboys acquired Lance from the San Francisco 49ers before the start of the 2023 season, but he didn't play at all that year and appeared in just four games (one start) in 2024 as the third-stringer, throwing for 266 yards, no touchdowns and one interception. Backup Cooper Rush is also headed toward free agency, but the Cowboys would probably prefer to draft a new QB to groom as Dak Prescott's (hamstring) backup than re-sign Lance. The 24-year-old former third overall pick by the Niners in 2021 was injured in his rookie season and hasn't really ever gotten the chance to live up to his high expectations. He'll be looking for backup work on the open market in March.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Trey Lance was under center on Sunday as a starting quarterback for the first time since Week 2 of 2022. The inexperienced signal caller had a solid day, completing 20-of-34 passes for 244 yards and carrying the ball six times for 26 yards. Lance played well but struggled to convert in the red zone, with four drives ending in field goals and one ending as a turnover on downs. On the first quarter drive where Dallas failed to convert on fourth down, Lance missed running back Rico Dowdle in the end zone on what should have been an easy pass. The Cowboys ultimately fell 23-19 to the Commanders, but Lance put together a solid audition as he is slated to hit free agency in the spring.--Brant Henson - RotoBaller

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Trey Lance will start against the Washington Commanders in Week 18, according to insider Patrik Walker. Cooper Rush, who tallied 1,844 yards, 12 touchdowns, and five interceptions while filling in for Dak Prescott (hamstring), heads to the bench for Sunday's season finale. This move is not a reflection of Rush's performance but rather gives the Cowboys an opportunity to get extra game film on Lance as they continue to evaluate the quarterback position going forward. Both Rush and Lance are free agents in March, and it's likely that Dallas will only keep one (or zero) of them as Prescott's backup in 2025. In the short-term, Lance, a former No. 3 overall pick, gets a chance to showcase his talents against a Commanders team that intends to play all of its starters. The ex-49er has just 22 passing yards, zero touchdowns, and one interception through limited action in 2024. He ranks as a mid-to-high QB3 in Week 18 with some extra upside thanks to his rushing ability.--Andersen Pickard - RotoBaller
