Toronto Blue Jays starter Trent Thornton was stellar in his MLB debut during a 4-3 extra-innings loss to the Detroit Tigers on Sunday afternoon. He pitched five scoreless frames, allowing two hits and no walks. He also set a franchise record for most strikeouts in an MLB debut as he managed to punch out eight batters. The 25-year-old recorded a 9-8 record at Triple-A Fresno in 2018 to go along with a 4.42 ERA and 122/31 K/BB rate. He was ranked the 15th best prospect in the Jays system by MLB.com earlier this year. At best, Thornton was expected to join the bullpen as a middle reliever this season, but injuries have thrust him into a starting role. It is too early to pick him up in fantasy right now, but if he pitches well against the Cleveland Indians in his next start, he may be a piece of the Jays' rotation moving forward.--Raymond Harrison - RotoBaller

Seattle Mariners reliever Trent Thornton recorded his first save of the season (and of his career) in Wednesday's 5-2 victory over the Rays. He wasn't the first choice in the ninth, but Andres Munoz walked the first two batters he faced and then hit a batter, prompting a pitching change. It is a situation to monitor, as Munoz has also been used in the eighth inning if the situation calls for it, allowing others to record saves, namely Ryne Stanek. Thornton doesn't figure to get many more opportunities, but should the opportunity arise, the 30-year-old has been solid this season, posting a 3.22 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, and 20.3% K-BB%.--Jarod Rupp - RotoBaller

The Seattle Mariners acquired right-handed reliever Trent Thornton from the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday in exchange for infielder Mason McCoy, according to sources. The move comes after the Blue Jays designated Thornton for assignment last week when Toronto acquired reliever Genesis Cabrera from the St. Louis Cardinals. The 29-year-old hard-throwing right-hander came up as a starting-pitching prospect for the Jays, but he's worked mostly in relief since 2021. He pitched in just 5 1/3 innings at the big-league level for Toronto this year and he has a 4.77 ERA (4.67 FIP), 1.42 WHIP, 98 walks and 249 strikeouts in 260 1/3 major-league innings in the last five years over 108 appearances (35 starts). Thornton won't suddenly have any fantasy value with the move to the American League West.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

Toronto Blue Jays relief pitcher Trent Thornton was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo on Sunday. The 28-year-old righty will replace Tim Mayza (shoulder), who landed on the 15-day injured list with a dislocated shoulder, in the Jays bullpen. Thornton, who was just optioned to Triple-A back on July 30, owns a 4.26 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, and 30:15 K/BB ratio over 38 innings with Toronto this year.--Jon Mathisen - RotoBaller

Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Trent Thornton has been recalled from Triple-A Buffalo on Saturday. The 28-year-old reliever, who's gone back and forth between the majors and the minors this year, will provide some bullpen depth for the Jays moving forward. He owns a 4.38 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, and 29:15 K/BB ratio over 37 innings (26 appearances) this season. Rookie Max Castillo was optioned to Triple-A in a corresponding move.--Jon Mathisen - RotoBaller
