2 days agoPhiladelphia Phillies shortstop Trea Turner (back) is not expected to return to the starting lineup until Wednesday, according to manager Rob Thompson. Turner missed his second straight game on Sunday due to back spasms. The organization plans to rest him again on Monday before the team has an off day on Tuesday. That would give Turner four days of rest before likely getting back into the lineup on Wednesday. The expectation is that Edmundo Sosa will continue start at shortstop until Turner is back. Sosa could have some short term fantasy value, but might not be worth adding with Turner possibly returning on Wednesday.--Andy Webb - RotoBaller

23 hours agoPhiladelphia Phillies shortstop Trea Turner (back) is not in the team's lineup for their home-opening series against the Colorado Rockies. Turner has been limited to just one outing thus far while experiencing back spasms that have held him out for three straight contests. Fortunately, the 31-year-old was seen taking ground balls on Monday. He noted that he was feeling better and that he hoped to play again on Wednesday. Turner has no hits in his first four at-bats but has been a good bet for four-category production when he's healthy. Teammate Edmundo Sosa projects to continue filling in at shortstop while the veteran is sidelined.--Alex Ciulla

2 days agoPhiladelphia Phillies shortstop Trea Turner (back) and catcher J.T. Realmuto (foot) are not in Sunday's lineup when the Phillies conclude a series with the Washington Nationals. Turner was scratched from Saturday's lineup due to back spasms, and Realmuto was removed from Saturday's game after fouling a ball off his foot. His X-rays came back negative, but the team will exercise caution with both of their key players. As a result, Edmundo Sosa will get the nod at shortstop for the second-straight day and bat sixth. Rafael Marchan will play behind the plate and bat ninth. Fantasy managers should monitor their status leading up to their next contest on Monday against the Colorado Rockies. Both Sosa and Marchan are worth a look as budget plays in DFS facing Washington southpaw Mitchell Parker.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller

3 days agoPhiladelphia Phillies shortstop Trea Turner (back) was scratched from Saturday's lineup due to back spasms. As a result, Edmundo Sosa will cover shortstop and bat ninth. Fantasy managers should continue to keep a close eye on his status leading up to their next contest on Sunday. If Turner were to miss an extended period, Sosa would likely see most of the starting opportunities. Last season, Turner posted a .295/.338/.469 slash line with 25 doubles and 21 long balls. He swiped 19 bags and showed a strong eye at the plate as he posted a strong 18.2 percent strikeout rate. Last summer, Sosa posted a .257/.313/.422 line with 12 doubles and seven round-trippers. He will face Washington right-hander Jake Irvin, who held a 4.41 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP last season.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller

1 month agoMLB.com's Todd Zolecki writes that the Philadelphia Phillies think they can improve their chances of winning the World Series by making shortstop Trea Turner their leadoff hitter, although manager Rob Thomson won't make a final decision on the batting order until the end of spring training. "As long as he's got the mindset of getting on base – and I think he does – being in the leadoff spot could help that a little bit," Thomson said. Turner has hit second 234 times in his two seasons in Philly, compared to just 38 times as the leadoff man. However, the 31-year-old could move to leadoff in 2025, dropping Kyle Schwarber to cleanup. It could make Turner more selective, which would be a good thing, as he has chased more pitches (34.7%) with the Phils than he did in his first eight seasons (27.4%). A move to leadoff should boost Turner's steals and runs scored for fantasy managers.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller
