Trayce Thompson Designated For Assignment, Dodgers Claim Cory Mazzoni
7 years agoLos Angeles Dodgers outfielder Trayce Thompson was designated for assignment by the team on Tuesday. They now have seven days to trade or release Thompson. If they don't and he clears waivers, he can be sent down to Triple-A Oklahoma. The move was prompted by the Dodgers claiming reliever Cory Mazzoni off waivers from the Cubs. Thompson had run out of options and was unlikely to make the club given the glut of outfielders that includes Matt Kemp, Joc Pederson, Kike Hernandez, Andrew Toles and prospect Alex Verdugo. Thompson injured his neck at the end of the 2016 season and never regained any momentum in 2017, going 6-for-49 (.122). Mazzoni has one option year left and was assigned to Triple-A. He hasn't impressed at any level for the Mets, Padres or Cubs, but the Dodgers could always use bullpen arms, especially if they can be stashed in the minors. He can be ignored for now, and Thompson may still show life on another ball club.
