Tigers Tab Franchise-Type Outfielder Riley Greene at No. 5
6 years agoThe Detroit Tigers are in desperate need of some offensive talent and as a result took high school outfielder Riley Greene (Oviedo, FL.) with the No. 5 pick in the 2019 MLB amateur draft. The 18-year-old left-handed hitter was considered to be one of the best pure hitters in the class with some power due to his "terrific approach and smooth swing." He batted .422 with eight home runs, 27 RBI, 11 doubles, 37 runs scored and 13 stolen bases at Hagerty High School this past season. Greene, who his high school coach Pat Cleveland called a "franchise type," has been compared to current San Diego Padres first baseman Eric Hosmer. Detroit, which has plenty of pitching talent in the minor leagues, took University of Arizona's second baseman Nick Quintana in the second round (47th overall).
