7 years agoWashington Capitals defenseman John Carlson contributed three assists in Sunday night's 5-4 overtime loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets. Carlson duplicated his performance from Game 1, a 4-3 overtime loss, and now sits at six points (all assists) in two games. Five of them have come on the power play. Carlson finished with 32 power-play points in the regular season. It's hard to tell how many more games the Caps have left to play in the postseason, but Carlson is a safe bet in any of them.--Barry Miles

1 year agoWashington Capitals defenseman John Carlson registered two assists as the team collected a fifth consecutive win on Wednesday with a 4-3 scoreline in overtime against Buffalo. The Capitals, who have now gone 8-1-1 over the last few weeks, chased the game for most of the night, but Carlson helped Tom Wilson to tie the game at three with around a minute left in regulation and collected his second assist when Dylan Strome decided the game eight seconds from the end of overtime. Carlson himself couldn't score despite firing off a season-high seven shots on goal. The Swedish blue-liner has notched four points during the team's winning streak, reaching 11 points (one goal, 10 assists) for the season with 16 games played.--Taavi Pailk - RotoBaller

1 year agoWashington Capitals defenseman John Carlson celebrated his first multi-point outing of the season on Sunday, dishing out two assists in a 3-1 victory over the Sharks. The assists came inside the final five minutes of action when Washington found a way to turn around the game. The Capitals haven't looked great early in the season, but they have now strung together three consecutive wins, and Carlson can be pretty happy with his contributions. He's sitting on seven points (one goal, six assists) through eight games. Carlson has also tallied 18 blocks with 18 shots on goal and a plus-one rating.--Taavi Pailk - RotoBaller

2 years agoWashington Capitals defenseman John Carlson finished Sunday's 5-2 loss to the Rangers with two assists. The offensively-gifted rearguard helped Dylan Strome and Aliaksei Protas on the scoreboard. Carlson played his fifth game since returning from a fractured skull and has now averaged exactly a point per game since his comeback. For the season overall, Carlson has produced nine goals and 17 assists in 35 games. He's done very well to return from a nasty injury and it's great to see that his productivity hasn't suffered because of the blow.--Taavi Pailk - RotoBaller

2 years agoWashington Capitals defenseman John Carlson (head) has been activated from Injured Reserve and he's set to rejoin the lineup Thursday against Chicago. The star rearguard hasn't played since Dec. 23 after taking a slap shot to the head. It was only recently revealed that Carlson suffered a fractured skull and a severed temporal artery in the incident. His return will be a massive boost for a team that still has an outside chance of getting into the playoffs. Carlson, who has posted 21 points in 30 games this season, is expected to assume his normal duties on the first defensive pairing and the top power-play unit. Rasmus Sandin will be forced to settle for a role on the second unit.--Taavi Pailk - RotoBaller
