The Uphill Battle for Golden Tate's Appeal
5 years agoNew York Giants wide receiver Golden Tate is facing a four-game suspension to start the NFL season for violating the league's substance-abuse policy after failing a drug test back in April, roughly a month after signing a four-year, $37.5 million deal. Head coach Pat Shurmur commented on the situation, stating "Business as usual" as offensive installation continues for the Giants. But as multiple NFL sources have agreed, there is "almost no way" his appeal will be successful. Not only because the NFL's substance-abuse policy is very rigid to begin with, but there is a precedent that surrounds the Tate case dating back to 2014 with Indianapolis Colts linebacker Robert Mathis. Mathis states that he had failed the test due to a fertility drug that he and his wife were using to have another child. He did not inform the NFL before hand, therefore the suspension was not lifted. If Tate's appeal miraculously is successful, look for him to be an integral part of this offense right away, but if the appeal does not go through, you will see a two-game suspension for the NFL vet.
