Tanner Rainey Records Nationals First Save
3 years agoWashington Nationals relief pitcher Tanner Rainey earned the save in Sunday's 4-2 victory over the New York Mets. It was the team's first victory of the year and the first time we've seen the club handle a save opportunity. All indications are that the Nationals will go with a closer-by-committee approach this year. However, Kyle Finnegan has been regarded as the most likely candidate to be at the head of that committee. Finnegan pitched the eighth inning in Sunday's game. It's important to note that the Nationals were trailing 2-1 in the game when Finnegan entered in the top of the eighth. The team scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a 4-2 lead. If the Nationals had been ahead from earlier on, we may have seen the bullpen handled differently, so don't be too quick to anoint Rainey as the new frontrunner for saves for the team.
