Tanner Houck Competing For Rotation Spot
2 years agoMassLiveSports' Christopher Smith reported Tuesday that Boston Red Sox pitcher Tanner Houck will be used as a starting pitcher during spring training and is one of seven pitchers competing for a starting rotation spot. The 26-year-old served mainly as a starter in 2021 but as a reliever in 2022, making just four starts in 32 appearances with a 5-4 record and eight saves to go with a 3.15 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, and 22.7% strikeout rate. Houck missed the final several months of the 2022 season with lower back inflammation but had a successful surgery in the off-season. Manager Alex Cora said that Houck will be used in a multi-inning role if he does end up in the bullpen. His role will mostly determine his fantasy value, as he would be a potential fantasy asset as either a starter or a closer, but would have limited value as a middle reliever.
